09 Moose tags
« on: February 26, 2009, 11:37:54 PM »
Whos applying? seems like a slew of memebers here draw every year, we are going to run out of memebers getting tags and posting the great storys of their hunts. :) I am applying 11 points this year, I can only hope

Who's NOT putting in, would be the better question.  Me, I'll be in with 13 points but don't expect to draw. I'm trying to decide whether to put in for one of the antlerless hunts. I think I will. Can't eat antlers.

If a guy doesn't care about antlers might as well put in for a cow tag.  I'm out but hope a bunch of you on here draw.   :chuckle:

I'll be sheep hunting this fall if I have my way.

THANKS.  About as far as Alaska was.  Hoping gas is still in the 2.00 range by then.  I was squeezing out proverbial bricks this last year when the draw happened and it was over $4

right...it is about the same distance i guess. you might look at a bear tag while you're there...lots of them, not sure of the details though.

my stepdad was just north of there this past fall fishing atlantics and the guide was calling bulls in while they were fishing.

I'm applying for all three OIL tags, 10 or 11 points for sheep and 9 or 10 for goat and moose.  I'll probably put in for an antlerless moose hunt, I could really use the meat as a newlywed.  But my true heart lies in a goat tag!

Putting in for ghost numbers on OIL tags but sheep.  Everything else will require more time than I can commit right now, but I've only got 1 point for each :P

The sheep units I'm applying for are in my backyard for the most part :chuckle:

While I can see your point about the time requirement, you can usually find some time somewhere.  It may not be the hunt of your dreams, but there is lots of help on this site to make it happen.  I personally think ghost points on OIL tags is a :bdid:, unless you absolutely know you are not available, like the military.  These tags are hard enough to get drawn for, each year you are not in the drawing means you have zero chance.  You have to look at your hunting lifespan with these tags.  Yes, you might be young, but the drawing odds on these tags still are not in your favor.  Most people that put in for these tags will never be drawn, and every year that you're not in the drawing reduces your chances even more.

:yeah:  I agree 110%. When your laying on your death bed I seriously doubt your going to be thinking "I wish I had worked one more week", but its quite possible you could be thinking "man I wish I had drawn one of those OIL tags"

On a side note, you wont see me complain about all you ghost point guys, knock yourselves out. Thats just less competition for me and my family :IBCOOL:

I have 11 points this year I will be putting in like always. It will probably be a person who has never hunted and his/her first year putting in for moose that draws the tag. We will see :dunno:

Its more school than work.  I've put school off long enough after graduating and probably wont have the time to cut class and scout for moose or goat.  With sheep I live within 30 minutes of 2 units that I have hunted all my life, much easier for me.

Hell if I drew the tag my boss would probably cut work and come with me :chuckle:

Took me 20 years to finally draw the moose last year. I be now trying to get my last special species tag for Wa., sheep and also a second goat tag, I drew one in the Olympics before the point system on first try.

I will apply of course but I think I want to focus on getting my antelope this year, 400 pound color phase bear and another 180 class whitetail. I have to tell my self all these things so I don't get depressed when I don't get drawn.  :chuckle:

 :yeah:

Antelope is my #1 priority this year (mostly 'cause I think I have an outside chance of being drawn for that one in MT).  I only have 4 points for Moose, 7 for Elk, and 4 for Deer.  Bought all the raffle tags though.

????? you live close to 108 and 111????  I Elk hunt close to the border tons of moose. A good chance of getting a bigger Canaden Bull.

There's getting to be 45's in all units. My bull came in and at a quick glance I gave him a 50". Ended up being 43" :bash:

I only put in the Selkirk unit and 49 unit. I have 13 points but so do 1000's of other people :bash: Would love to get it but not planning my vacation on it.  :chuckle: That will be antelope hunting in August

You should put in for Huckleberry and three forks also. There's lots of moose in those too.

Don't know those units as well and I'm pickey, I want a 45" plus bull
????? you live close to 108 and 111????  I Elk hunt close to the border tons of moose. A good chance of getting a bigger Canaden Bull.

There's getting to be 45's in all units. My bull came in and at a quick glance I gave him a 50". Ended up being 43" :bash:
Three Forks GMUs 108, 111

Those units are to the East of me, I have thought of Three Forks, I've seen several in that area. It is only about an 1.5 hours from me and I've only been there five or so times. I just don't spend much time up that way. I just really know my way around 49 and Selkirk.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

I'm in for 1 or 2 units with 6 points.

If you think he's 50", he's probably 40".  If he is 50", you aren't thinking or wondering if he's 50".  Rather, you are pissing your pants.
