Old Eyes and Pin Blurring

I shoot a single pin.
I wear reading glasses because my eyes were adjusted for distance.
I have a blury pin and a bright glow from the pin just above and to the left of the pin head.
I've wrapped my sight housing with electrical tape to tone down the brightness of the pin glare.
That helped some.
Regardless...................I don't have a clear or even reasonably clear pin.

I know they make the lens that goes in the pep but I worry about a pep lens getting fogged in or having a water droplet on it at crunch time.

Any thoughts or suggestions or feed back on what has worked for other blind guys??

You need a clarifier peep lense - however I'm not sure these are legal for Washington.

Worn contacts my whole life until I had Lasik for distance which is what caused the up close poor vision.

I've had this same problem for the last 2-3 years.  Readers improve the sight pin blurriness but the target becomes a huge blur and prescription glasses keep the target in focus while blurring the pins much worse than no glasses at all.  I've learned which part of the blurred pin is actually the pin (the bottom 1/3rd of the blur) so that's how I've (sort of) resolved this situation so far.  Certain lighting situations make the blurriness situation better or worse.

I'll be honest, if I knew for sure that this "clarifier" would resolve the problem I would install it on my bow regardless of the legality.

I have one on my Target Bow and it works wonders.  I wear contacts and struggled to get a clear picture until I installed a clarifier.
Generally, they are used for scopes on target bows, but it would work for a pin site as well.

I'm researching this issue a little at the moment and it seems there are both clarifiers and a verifiers, each with a different purpose.  Sounds like a verifier might be what is needed for blurry pins whereas a clarifier is what is needed for a blurry target.  Check out this link for more - http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.php?t=1319247

I should also mention that some folks are using a clarifier or verifier during practice but remove it during hunting season since rain/fog are issues with the lenses.  This topic definitely deserves further investigation before deciding what (if anything) to get to resolve problems for our old eyes.

I didn't know there was a product like this available until this thread. Interestingly I was shooting the walk through course with all my gear (weighted pack, binoculars and new contact lens) yesterday and experienced the same sort of blurrieness of my pins. Thankfully it wasn't so bad that I couldn't make them out.....cool to know they exist.

I just ordered the verifier tool that tells you which power to get.
Then I will order the correct one.
Going to a proshop that has one is great but I would rather test the different ones on my own terms.
You need to be careful to keep target in focus but still help your pin clarity.

If you can try a different color pin that might help. I think the green pin on the HHA site is very bright but if you change it to a red one you might see a clear edge on the pin profile. Also I have painted the inside of my scope ring flat black to stop the glare.

From what I've been reading, different people have different experiences with which colors are better than others.  In my case red is the worst by far.  Green and yellow are better.  I'm going to start experimenting with ways to lessen pin brightness to see if that helps without causing problems in low light situations.

For whatever reason, my Red pin which happens to be my 60 Yard pin is the blurriest for me. The rest of my pins are green and aren't as blurry.

Run a number 1 or 2 clarifier, or decrease your peep aperture size.  This will eliminate halo pin, and bring pin into focus but may affect target objective due to size of aperture or fogging etc. of clarifier.  The only way I have totally eliminated this is to use a 0.015" blue fiber with an LP light.  Obviously not in a hunting application.  Best option is a clairifier and a different fiber size and color.

Montana gold makes sights that dim and brighten based on lighting to eliminate pin halo. I highly recommend. I wear eyeglasses and definitely helps.

I never thought about this problem until this thread! 

I have been suffering from fuzzy pins forever.  I can see the target without problem.  My spectacles are very strong, do not use (probably should use) bi-focals.  But I can't imagine how hard bi-focals would be with a bow.  Ugh!

I would like to check out these clarifiers.

I ordered the various "Verifier" lens strengths and the "tool".
Clarifier focuses the target. Verifier focuses the pins.
I will be able to look through the different lenses at a pin I hold at arms length, at home.
I will then know what strength of lens to get while still keeping my target in focus.
I can then return the tool and order the correct lens.

I get the B /berries frozen select at Safeway and eat about 1/2 to 3/4 cup every other day

We toyed with making Verifier and Clarifier compatible peep sights for awhile now.  But since we are primarily a hunting peep company we've really resisted the idea.  Our testing of both in hunting conditions was terrible.  Treestand hunting I could see it working ok.  Maybe even ground blind hunting.  But dust and water was a constant issue when we tested in the NW bush.

 Early on it was easy to see which of the three dots were the real one and which were the ghost dots.  As my eyes got worse it got harder and harder to tell the difference between real and ghost pins.  One year at the ATA I got a chance to talk with Randy Ulmer about this.  He turned me on the possibility that as we get older and our eyes get weaker we lose depth of field. And that leads to these fuzzy pins and ghost images.  He explained that by adjusting our aperture diameter we can get back a lot of the depth we lost with our aging weaker eyes. 

At the time I was shooting a 7/32 aperture with a .019 pin.   I stepped down to a 3/32" aperture and my ghost pins went away and pin was perfect!  I stepped it up gradually and finally settled on 5/32" as a compromise between the most light I can get to my eye without getting ghost images or excessive fuzziness.  That's been about eight years now.  I am waiting to get a new pair of glasses to decide if I need to take a step back to the 1/8" as I'm starting to see a wide pin now instead of a round one.

I found a quick, somewhat satisfactory solution.  I simply put a small piece of masking tape over the far ends of my fiber optics which cuts the amount of light entering them.  It deadened the light enough to make the pins much sharper in the daylight without all the haze and extra glowing.  In low light I simply remove the tape to provide good light in the ends of the pins.  Not a permanent solution but on quick notice I'm happy to have it!

I screwed with the verifier tool at home this weekend.

Not impressed.

I will stick with black electrical tape wrapped around my sight housing to mute the brightness.

I added a verifier peep and it worked. Illegal for hunting tho. Got a new script for glasses, a new sight that's further out front and has .019 pins. Removed the glass from the peep. Peep is huge but solved the problem and fits the sight housing.

A great thread.  I don't have problems with pin blur 'yet'.  Typically my problem is a really shaky peep and pin when an elk walks in front of me.  I had the pro-shop check my set up and they told me, "...it's not the bow!"

I am far sighted and had the same problem for years. I solved the problem by going down to Costco and getting glasses that are far sighted and a very small portion with bifocals on the bottom. I have Transition glasses and sights are fussy. So now I have glasses for hunting and target practice and work great. I also shoot a pistol and rifle and made me a better shot. I also went to a single pin with a micro glow pin.  This might help you

I dont need glasses, but im curious on what you said, does it not screw up your peripheral vision?  Your ability to catch small movement at a distance?

I would forever be lost in the fog:)

2Many, I went through picking a verifier last fall, I bought a 5 but it fuzzed out the target just a little.  I'm getting a 4 and moving the 5 to the backup bow.  I use +2.25-2.50 cheaters and the 6 I tried was waaaay too much.  You can get them on Amazon or call Specialty and talk to Michael, either works.
