Wallows
« on: August 15, 2017, 06:38:11 PM »
Hi guys I have a question. I have been looking on Google Earth and found a couple of water sources. I am looking for places to sit midday early season. All the water sources are on South facing slopes. Would it be a good strategy to sit there when elk bed on North facing slopes?

Thank you

I've killed elk on north and south facing slopes before. But in all honestly. Why not hit the bedding area? That herd bull isn't gonna be laying down. He gonna be guarding his ladies. Move in and make him uncomfy. If you have a caller and your 40-50 yards in front of him. Play the wind and make the big guy loose it. He will come. Just be aggressive and patient. keep the wind in your face.

But if that is the only water source around. Might not hurt to put a trail cam on it. See if you can pattern them. Find out which direction they come and go. Morning or night.

I have a bull on cam. He always comes in to my cams view from the right. Leaves going left. Not one time has he done it difffent.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

Is there a trick to keeping the wind in your face when it's constantly swirling every few minutes?  Also, when it does swirl for a few seconds;  how long is the down wind side affected with human scent? Is it just until the wind comes back into your face, or does your scent  stick on the vegetation for a little longer?

All that depends on the environment you are in and what the weather and wind is doing. Hot windy day in a meadow or open timber (no under brush) your scent is gonna disappear faster. Verses if you are in a swampy area with cold moist day. Your scent will stick around for a lot longer. I'm no expert nor do I claim to be. Just going off what has worked for me. I always carry smoke in a bottle and I use it. Cheapest insurance a hunter can have.
