Help identify Japanese Rifle
«

I tried to take pictures of any distinguishing features. It is a very small bore, but I don't know the caliber or much of anything else. Anybody have any ideas what it is?

It's an Arisaka type 38 made at Nagoya Arsenal between 1933-40. And it's valuable. See the Chrisanthumum? That was ground off of every rifle at the close of the war as it is a sacred symbol. To find one with the flower is AWESOME!!! Also the late models had wood butt plates and were not as well made, looks like that has a steel butt plate?
. DO NOT restore in any way, you'll totally ruin any value. No blueing, stock work, nothing.
I'm not a collector and don't know that much about them but would jump on one of those if offered at the right price.
I'm jealous that thing is AWESOME!!!!

They used both 6.5 and 7.7. The 6.5 are more valuable than the 7.7. I heard once that if they had the rising sun symbol they had a chrome moly bore, or something like that.

According to the serial numbers and marking on top it is a 6.5 type 38. I know nothing of the chrome barrel stuff but do know for sure that the flower is a sacred symbol which was supposed to be ground off. this was a comprimise that MacArthur made to the japanese at their surrender. That is so cool I can barely stand it.

thankyou, thankyou, thankyou......... You guys are very helpful... A friend's father brought this home after the war. He will be very pleased to finally know what it is? and some of the characteristics about the stamping. His father told a story that he killed a antelope at 500-600 yards with it? Story or not, it was apparently very accurate. Excuse my lack of knowledge, but (6.5) approximately what caliber is that? .223? or something of the nature?

That looks to be in good shape. My father has 2, A 6.5 and a 7.7mm. Norma makes factory rounds for both calibers. Gutpile was right about the 'mum'. A rare piece for sure. Both rifles my dad has were brought back from my grandfathers. The 7.7mm from my GF in the navy. They seized a supply ship full of rifles and ammo. The navy chose to dump the crates of rifles overboard. They sit at the bottom of the ocean. Very sad. The other came from my GF who was in the army. Got his in the phillipines. My dad has a picture of my grand dad and great uncle each holding an arisaka and a jap flag. Cool stuff there.

If anyone was interested yes it has the metal butt plate, I just shared this information with my friend. He is very thankful, and wanted me to pass on his appreciation!
