Tikka T3 Magazine Issue
« on: August 17, 2017, 06:54:25 PM »
Hi All,

My T3 magazine damages the tip of my Federal Premium Nosler Partition rounds.  It warps, bends, and flattens them.  I read a couple years ago that Tikka acknowledges the problem, but claims it doesn't affect accuracy.  I cant stand it and want to change bullets or magazines.  Has anyone found an aftermarket magazine to fix this problem?  If an alternate magazine isn't available, has anyone found an effective hunting round that doesn't get damaged by these magazines?

I just spent about 30min searching the interwebs and didn't even find the old article where Tikka acknowledged the problem.  Any help would be appreciated.

Virtually every gun made that has much recoil will damage Nosler Partition tips.  I had a Winchester M70 .300 Win Mag that flattened every pointed soft point round that went into the magazine box.  It's not the design of the Tikka magazine, it's inertia.

What ranges are you shooting at?  If it's 400 and in I wouldn't even think twice about it.  It will have zero significance to your accuracy.  If you are shooting long ranges, then the Partition probably isn't the best bullet for accuracy anyway.

In both my Tikka.270 WSM and .300 WSM I shoot polymer tip accubond CT and have had zero issues with the tips being flattened. Are you shooting hand loads or factory ?

I am shooting factory loads, and it isn't the recoil damaging the tips.  They get damaged just from hiking around with the rifle on my shoulder.

What caliber? When a round is in the magazine how much space is there and is the round kinda firm or sloppy fitting side to side ?

I use Hornady  SSTs and have no issues.  I used to shoot 140grain SPs and never noticed any tip deformation of the lead. :dunno:

Without a picture, I'm having a hard time visualizing the issue.  I've shot Barnes for many years out of my Tikka, so deformation is never an issue.  If it's just the lead tip on a Partition, it's not affecting the accuracy.  You could go to a polymer tip or a monolithic bullet?

The attached photo literally only took a ride in the truck while loaded in the magazine.  Notice the notch in the end and the overall tip starting to bend/warp.  I can look for some more severe damaged bullets, but I put them away somewhere deep because I couldn't convince myself to use them.

I love the nosler partition as a hunting round, but feel like I should find a solid tip bulled for piece of mind (or a different magazine).
