Got the pup on a few dove.  He is figuring it out.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

First time hunter went to Moses Lake last Saturday and saw very few doves in the areas my "teacher" took me. He said it was the worst opening he had experienced for dove. I would very much like to continue hunting on the west side of the mountains where I live (Yelm area) so I don't have the travel vs. success scenario going on. Any successes or possible locations over here?

if you have brush around where you are hunting, toss some of the dead ones in the brush and have the pup root them out.  Or tie a string to a leg and lay a trail for the pup to nose out.

Friday had way more doves out than Saturday.  I think the Friday shooting shifted them to a different nearby area.

I wonder how much the smoke affects them. I had plenty flying in on Saturday and Sunday and then nothing on Monday. Monday the smoke started to roll in but didn't seem that bad.

That was definitely a thought we had. While we were driving there were some widely dispersed and maybe like one or two were on the power lines. Tons of duck though. We were wondering if it was the extended hot weather, or maybe even the smoke. I might have to wait for other birds to open up to get some good action in. Sadly we have 2 pairs of eurasians eating up the bird seed from my wife's feeders. I saw the way they were laughing at me.

We got into the dove and had an amazing shoot.  Both my Son and I limited out.  There were as many birds as I've ever seen in WA.

Fishnfowler, have you been able to return to your home with the nasty fire going on?

Hope all is well and nice to hear you had a good dove shoot prior to the shock of having to leave..

I’m still looking for a decent place to shoot a few dove.  They seem to stick to private property; seen several large flocks roosting in someone’s front yard.
