Boys 2nd bear
« on: August 27, 2017, 10:45:01 AM »
Well,  pressed for time to write up a proper story,  but here goes.   My 12 yr old son took his 2nd bear this week,  after 2 hours sleep and a 1 mile hike up 800 feet in the dark.   He lost a bear when he was 10, got his first at 11, missed one cleanly last week,  then took it this week ( quite possibly the same bear).

Met grandpa at 2 am, drove 3 hours,  then hiked in.   Grandpa has 7 month old new knees so this was good therapy for him,  and a learning experience for my son.  We split up from grandpa on the way up the ridge,  and when we crested immediately saw the bear at 150 yds,  between where grandpa was going to crest.   So we backtracked behind the ridge to be quiet and keep sound and scent down,  and popped out above the boar.  Son had a hard time last week getting a solid rest off the pack in a similar situation.   We practiced with the 22 since then,  perfecting some field positions to use,  where the bipod is either too high to use or in the way.

So we set up,  the boar must have smelled us and seemed concerned.   Son aims and fires at the quartering toward us bear.  It flips upside down and rolled 10yds out of sight.   By then grandpa shows up and I direct them to the spot last seen,  then join them.    Birds were making a racket to the right side hill from where i last saw the bear so i sent grandpa that direction,  about 15 yds.  I looked,  found blood,  followed it downhill 15 yds to a dead 230 lb boar (estimate).  He hit it in the neck with a shoulder exit,  doa bear.

My son has been spoiled with his trips,  either he brings good luck or daddy and grandpa know what they are doing :)

Anyways, this concluded 2017 bear for us as archery starts way too soon!

That is an adventure he will never forget!  Glad he got to share it with you both.

I love everything about this.  Thank you for sharing.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
