My Day at the Range...
« on: October 09, 2017, 05:28:41 PM »
Had a interesting day at the range Sunday with a late start, waiting for a lane, dead car battery, scope mount issues, and my brothers gun not wanting to set off his hand loads. But in the end it all worked out, I got to shoot my NIB Weatherby gen 1 in 308, the thing turned out to be a tack driver! It loved 45.5 grains of Varget under a 150 grain Hornady SST with a CCI 200 primer and bullet seated .015 off the lands. Got this 3 shot group at 100 yards at 2800 feet per second. Next stop dear season!

I'm no expert and I'm just asking a question. I was under the impression that Weatherby firearm barrels are made so the lands and grooves are milled deep into the barrel so the seating depth of the bullet really doesn't come into play.

Well this is a Weatherby Vanguard, which is actually a rebranded Howa with a different stock and fluted bolt. Either way I use a Hornady over case length tool to find my max height and subtract .015 from it for my starting height. Then I make sure it will fit in the magazine and work my loads from that point.

The higher end Mark V Weatherbys might be that way.

Hey! I'm not a complete idiot I have parts missing. Though sometimes I wonder.

If you want to make God laugh tell him your plans.
