West side early goose
« on: September 03, 2017, 08:41:53 PM »
Hi everybody! I've been doing alot of research and wanted to do the early goose season this year in Skagit or Whatcom counties, have heard alot better things from Whatcom though. I've got some basic calling down and I think I've got a decent idea on how to hunt them from research, just wasn't really sure on what type of ground to be looking for. Do public WDFW wildlife areas provide good early goose hunting, or should I be doing some scouting on private lands and asking permission?... if so should it be grass fields, or potato fields, or something different? Like I said, think I know enough on how to hunt them in the field for now at least, just not sure if I should be looking at private or public lands or what type of ground specifically to start out with? Thanks in advance everyone!

You need to find the fields that the birds are already using and get permission to hunt there. A good goose hunt takes at least 2 days in the field. The 1st to locate them and the 2nd to set up exactly where they were. Setting up in random fields will not be anywhere near as successful. Good luck!

3nails, thanks for the response. I'm gonna get out and give scouting a go tomorrow. Hopefully I'll find some fields they're hanging out in like you were saying and get permission from the landowner. Thanks again!

Look for wheat fields during the early goose season, they'll start to spread out a bit more once the corn starts getting cut.  Early season in Whatcom county is about getting access to private land, the WDFW properties up here still have crops.  You'll have a better time finding public access down in Skagit, if I were you I'd start at the Skagit HQ and start watching the bay, a lot of geese will go back and forth between the fields and the water.
