Places to hunt/scout small game (near Thurston county)
« on: September 08, 2017, 01:38:22 PM »
Very new to hunting. First hunt was last weekend for mourning dove in Moses Lake. I only was able to get 4 shots off due to low bird counts in the areas we were. My mentor told me it was the worst opening weekend he had ever seen. Being anxious to build my experience level I am hoping to find some areas that are closer to my location instead of driving several hours to do the same thing. From what I have read, it is wise to pick an area and learn it. I am just looking for the right area(s) to spend my time learning that is also good for a novice. I plan on using my shotgun (although I am looking at .22LR on the side), and only have plans on going after bird this season and looking to possibly do some spring turkey if I can prepare for that as well. Some rabbit would be nice, if the opportunity presents itself. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

There's really only one option in Thurston county, and that's Capitol State Forest. All you will need is a $35 Discover pass. Another option since you're in Yelm, would be the National Forest lands off highway 7, between Elbe and Morton. I believe that would mostly involve parking at gates and hiking in.

Thanks for the reply. I will check into those areas. Morton is pretty close when you compare to Moses Lake.

Also check out the Cowlitz Wildlife Area, headquartered in Morton.  There are several units along the Cowlitz valley, from Randall down to the Cowlitz Trout Hatchery.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

I know that area a bit. We use the gravel pits out there occasionally.

What do you mean by reprod?

Young trees.  Generally firs in that awkward teenage stage...bigger than small saplings, but not yet grown to adult, merchantable sized timber.
