Rate my bow setup

Just got a bow and looking to get into archery. Running a Hoyt Powermax 70lb bow, tru glow 3 pin sight, beman ics hunter classic arrows, whister biscuit rest and a true fire release. The rest and sight are off of an old bow so I will probably upgrade those. Also looking for suggestions on broadheads. If i feel comfortable I'm gonna hunt it for archery elk late season. I've heard a drop away rest in better for accuracy, the whisker biscuit is already showing some signs of wear and definitely want to upgrade to a 5 or seven pin sight. Any tips are appreciated or if anyone wants to meet up for some shooting in the Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood area let me know. Thanks

I use a Ripcord rest and an HHA Optimizer with a .010 pin and a rangerfinder.Takes out all of the guess work.

I'd rate it as acceptable. Honestly, it's perfectly adequate for killing elk and what I would or wouldn't change could be listed as personal preference. If you are serious about a different sight and shooting out to 80 yards I'd recommend looking at an Option 4 or Option 6. They have a floating pin you can dial for the long shot and will be less cluttered than a 7 pin sight.

Those option sights look pretty sweet, though they are spendy. I have only shot up to 50 so far and do want to practice shooting at farther distances. I really want to figure out my broadheads soon, thinking about expandable

FWIW,after using fixed pins for 30 years a single pin is a huge improvement.Then there is the price.You can get the sight,rest,half a dozen good arrows and broadheads for the same amount of just the sight.The Pic in my avatar is a Muzzy.46 yards through both sides of a ribcage on an Elk.30 yard blood trail and dead Elk.For me my range finder is the most important tool I have.Without it I am just guessing range and that has led to tag soup over the years.

I use a whisker biscuit on my bow. I can keep an arrow knocked while I walk around the woods & t doesn't fall out. I don't buy that they cause a decrease in accuracy. I'll shoot a smaller than fist sized group at 60 years all day long with it.

My rangefinder is a Nikon aculon, pretty cheap model i picked up at cabelas. Seems to have trouble in low light and I'm not sure if it is angle compensating. Anyone else have trouble ranging in low light? Seems like it could be pretty important

I personally like expandable broadheads, if you're going to use them on elk I would suggest finding something under 1 1/2" blade span. The bigger the blade the more kinetic energy lost to deployment. I like grim reaper razortip, 1 3/8" is what they recommend for elk.

I’m shooting a Red Wrx1 Ultra a Black Gold 5 pin slider with the 6’ dovetail a Qad rest front and rear stabalizers Tight Spot quiver and 300 spine FMJs and the only thing different is the credit card bill. The only thing that I don’t like is the wicker biscuit and that’s because I got one wet one year and it froze solid.

Try shooting a drop away that got frozen. I’ll NEVER shoot a drop away or moving rest. No doubt they are very slightly more accurate. Unless I was shooting a comp or a whitetail from an easy access tree stand I’ll never put one on my bow. Too many moving parts. If your whisker biscuit freezes just thaw it out with your hands and work it free with you fingers and you’re good to go.

I was looking at those black gold 5 pin sliders, what's the trade off with different sizes, dovetails etc? Also are those fmjs worth it? Do I need to get a different arrow stiffness than carbon?

I got the 6 in but the 4 would have been the better choice for me. The dovetail gives you more adjustment into how far you want your sight window out from the riser. As for the FMJs those things are solid and hard hitting. I’m my opinion there are the best arrow you can get for hunting( My opinion) Everyone on here has there favorite but I put a 125 grain broadhead on a FMJ through the opposite side shoulder of an elk at 50 yards(that’s not easy to do) got a full pass through and he only went 20 yards. That’s the day they became my favorite.
