Anyone seeing fall mushrooms yet?
« on: September 19, 2017, 10:11:02 AM »
I know its early with the rain just now showing up, but was wondering if anyone has gotten into the chanterelles or fall porcini yet?

My spot is about an hour from my house so just looking for picking reports to maybe save the time if its too early.

Happy hunting!

That dry weather we had really puts a damper on them so maybe the latest rain will help

Found some (chanterelles) out in the Coast Range this past weekend, but it was still pretty dry so not too many around. Hopefully the rain this week will help!

Got a FULL grocery bag of chantrelles on Wed. They were just popping up this week. Biggest were only about 4 inches across. Still lots of tiny buttons. I may go back tomorrow and see if the buttons have grown. Saw a couple shaggy manes, but didn't pick them.

Step on them once with your left foot and once with your right?   :dunno:   :chuckle:

Even if edible, those look way past prime to me, but I'm not an expert.  It might help to give a habitat description and what they might have been growing on for an ID.  Also, if unsure, maybe take a representative sample and leave the rest for the critters and to drop their spores if they have not already.   :dunno:

I'm pretty confident they're Psilocybe Azurescens
Found in my backyard compost near goat and lama turds. My understanding color changes blue/purple when agitated mean psilocybin is present.

We picked lots and lots of those as kids. It was preferred that the caps weren't open.

Hmm thought so. Cool find. Gonna trash em. Found some porcini in the back yard to. Quite an array of stuff grows back there. Decaying wood logs and almost always moist ground.

I have been getting out at least once a week for some timber inventory work (Idaho).  I have been pretty disappointed in the trend so far- found some Gomphus (scaly chanterelles, not actually closely related to chanterelles), but few true chanterelles.

Two-Steppers mean you eat them, take two steps and die.
I call any mushroom I can't identify Two-Steppers - That's a lot of mushrooms because I only can positively identify Morels.
Or the big ass tree hangers that I call Conks. :chuckle:

With those you would take two steps and then not remember the rest of your trip
