Sako or tikka?

I have an old 30-06 (springfield) and am looking into a new hunting rifle. I am thinking of a .308 or 30-06 but am not sure (looking for input). I am also hoping for input as to which gun you would prefer to own, or maybe a different one in general. I will be using for deer/elk/bear. Thanks guys for helping out a gun noob!

well there both made by Sako, i love my tikka. i own a respectable little collection of fire arms and there's just something about that tikka, its my favorite. that being said i plan on buying a Sako also. so in my opinion you cant go wrong just don't think the tikka is inferior because it cost less.

I guess one of the most simplistic questions would be:
What are the differences between the Tikka Model and the Sako Model you have in mind?

I am guessing the quality of the parts will be the major difference and the price will reflect that.

based on hunting deer/elk and bear what caliber do you think i should use? I am only familiar with 30-06

The two cartridges are very similar ballistically. The 30-06 has the advantage of being able to handle heavier bullets (180+) better and has a little more velocity in a given bullet weight. The only real advantage that I can see to the 308 is if you are looking for a rifle in a short action. I could be wrong, but I am fairly certain that Tikka uses the same action length for both long and short action cartridges, so this is a moot point if you go that route. I would go 30-06. It has a little more punch that is nice to have for the larger critters.

there the exact same barrels, the bolts are a little different and i think the mags are also. the tikka is a sweet shooting rifle for twice what they sell them for, the lower price is just a great bonus

The guns are of different quality. I know. I have a tikka. It's ok but it is not a sako.

I believe that the .308 short action vs the .30-06 long action would be the first choice to decide upon. Then whether he wants the Tikka or the Sako.

I own a Sako, and IF I could afford it, all my rifles would be Sakos.  That being said, Tikkas are good rifles and will provide years of service, and shoot as straight as you are capable.

Go to a shop that carries both, and try them out, feel how smooth they are when working the bolt, etc.... then make a decision.

I haven't messed with a sako 85 but I've been hunting with a sako 75 for a couple months now and I must say it is a Fine rifle.  The grip Kind of fills out your palm. The quality of the parts is just about as good as it gets as well.


You could look into a different caliber all together. Maybe a .338 federal.  Both guns can come in 338 fed.  Enough umph to wack em dead but still very minimal kick. It's really  just a necked up .308.
