Behold: The Spoon of Wonder
« on: September 24, 2017, 03:03:42 PM »
I am guilty of buying lures that look awesome. So awesome they must catch fish. So awesome that often, they simply don't. I go back to y usual set ups. However, all changed when I found......The Spoon of Wonder. This beauty is two spoons in one. That clearly means twice the mojo. Twice the catching power. Twice the magic. On one side....googly eye black on chrome.....the other side....sparkly googly eye with a uv finish over the cop car ah lah cookies and cream colors. This spoon in the last three trips has accounted for 6 out of 8 kept fish, a few released not by choice, and a chinook released by requirement. It is a two sided marvel. I'll be setting this one aside and using soon some winter blackmouth.

Like all magical lures it will depart you someday.  Especially if you plan on bouncing bottom for black mouth.

When I get a good lure like a lucky K15 or hot Kingfisher spoon I retire them if they make it through a season.  It makes the wall of fame.

I bid farewell to my #1 spoon of wonder, for some reason they quit making Kingfishers in the yellow fish scale.  For chinook, it outfished everything I had at least 5:1 everywhere from AK to Pt Townsend bank down to Buoy 10.  I hooked a nice bubble nook this year and it took a nasty turn at the boat and broke it off.

When you find one, buy a case of them.

Don't get caught up on colors.  It's usually the action of any particular lure rather than the color that catch the fish and make it that magical lure.  I have several plugs that have barely any of the paint left on them that outfits everything else still.

Oh Spoon of Wonder. You have provided again. I sent you to the depths while I wallowed in the chop. Your hook sank true and you held strong. Thank you oh Spoon of Wonder.

Silver and blue cast master... that is the magic spoon

The silver/blue Kastmaster and the red/white Dardevle have caught more fish than all other spoons combined.

Unfortunately most people will never understand this, and will spend their lives chasing marketing hype and advertising.

The old dardevil was my fav trout spoon.  I should try it one day on the downrigger if I could find one big enough.  Worked for trout, might work for salmon... :dunno:

As a kid early teen I found one of these lures on the beach. Took it fishing with my dad and his friend, caught a decent blackmouth and in the rush to "help" me land it I took a net handle to the face and had a huge bloody fat lip. But I still outfished the men in the boat.

When we moved to Seattle I turned that lure into an earring, worked as good at catching boys as it did fish.  :chuckle:

True, but if your throwing a lure they can't be beat...

Question... have any of you guys played with home cast version of a cast master? My brother loves to fish, and loves his cast masters. Is it worth me buying his favorite size so that he doesn't curse me when my kid loses his?

Hopefully your spoon of Wonder fishes a long and productive lifetime and never encounters the dreaded dogfish that have prematurely ended the careers of so many useful spoons.

Some lures just have the perfect action. If only we could recognize it!
My buddy and I had to sit through a humiliating day trolling cranks for walleyes with my wife. We were all using the "same" shad rap, but apparently hers was just a little different!  >:(

I hope you have a box of tissue in the boat for the day your line snaps! :chuckle:

My goal is one fat king later this month. I get that done I will retire it and set it aside. I admit I love buying a lure or two on impulse because it looks so darn cool. This time it actually catches fish!

I've got a boat full of impulse lures, and then there are the three that catch fish!

I went into the Sultan River in late February for a cop car Tadpolly that had caught more fish out of that river than all my other plugs put together.

I do 99% of my gear salmon fishing with a plain silver spoon. Absolutely deadly. Hell, if I could only fish ONE lure for ALL saltwater fish, it would be a plain silver spoon.

I recently treated most of my effective veteran spoons to new hooks.  We're ready for a long, and hopefully, productive season.

I unapologetically bummed 3 SOWs off my buddy, he doesn’t use them anymore and so I am back in business.  Can’t wait.

I’m honestly thinking of having one of the custom lure outfits paint me up a couple dozen.

My little brothers birthday is coming up so I was trying to figure out how to make a dyi  Kastmaster... and behold, I found some one making knock off blanks for very reasonable... the cost/benefit is since you assemble your own you can use any split ring, hook combo you like best!

That's true, I wouldn't waste my time.  But you claimed that they have caught more fish than all other spoons combined.  That's not about me, that's really more about the commercial troll fishery, where the bulk of all troll caught salmon have been caught over time.  Do you know any commercial fishermen who run weighted spoons?  Let alone, the majority of them?

We all have our favorites. Mine isn't a spoon, It's a 4" neon green curly tail grub on a white painted 3/8 Oz jig. I have caught just about everything but a sturgeon and salmonoids on that combo

I run mostly green or blue uv flashers .  I like long  leaders for spoons  with a knot that doesn't  cinch down so the spoon has a free flutter

I probably run 20 different spoons over the course of a season. But when I haven’t hooked up in awhile, seems like the Irish cream always comes out of the box.

JJB11B’s jig and the cookies and cream spoon are the same color scheme as a chartreuse and white clouser which, in the right size, will catch any fish that swims.

It's been a really good run for this guy.  I've tried a couple shiny replacements, but just don't have any confidence in them, so back down he goes.  But he keeps on producing, even all bent up and losing his paint!

The old Irish Cream is my go to spoon also.  I prefer hoochies lately but if I am running two rods one normally has an Irish Cream on it.
