Early season ***trophy***(pictures added)
« on: September 25, 2017, 09:04:11 AM »
Ups and downs.....highs and lows, what early archery season is all about!  Fortunately, my buddy and I found ourselves in the right place at the right time come opening morning an hour into our hunt. With my buddy leading, we began to enter into the base of a small draw when we both heard the unmistakable sound of elk to our left and slightly up on the side hill. Before we knew it, here came 3 cows working their way through the clumps of nasty 4' tall vines.  I found myself completely exposed and no cover near me. With the elk moving with a mission, wind in our favor, I simply stayed motionless until the lead cow went behind a tree. I drew back just as her head came around the tree followed by her front quarters. At full draw and half of her exposed, she sensed my presence, stopped and began to turn to head back up where she just came from. Feeling it was now our never situation, I let the arrow fly. It was a slightly quartering frontal shot (some would argue not the best shot opportunity). I watched as the arrow disappeared into her chest and down she went, immediately without taking another step.

With an incredible amount of luck, I felt blessed to have had the opportunity to harvest such an animal which will fill the freezer and feed my family for the year.......true trophy for me and my family!!,

I was also very fortunate to have experienced such an event with a good buddy of mine and to also have my dad (who is the reason I hunt as he sacrificed his time to have taught us 'boys' how to hunt) help with the pack out.

Pictures soon to follow.....

Trophy indeed congrats!  Watching an archery animal go down within sight of the shot is the pinnacle of bowhunting in my book.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

The true trophy is a full freezer. As a father that has taught two boys how to hunt and fish, there are very few things in life that make me prouder than watching them be successful in the field.
