Preserving fully velvet antlers
« on: September 30, 2017, 07:53:31 PM »
How do you go about preserving the velvet on antlers? A co worker salvaged this guy after he got hit by a log truck in August and left the skull here on top of the cache.  Mice got to it a little bit, but otherwise the velvet is still on.

I took my elk still in velvet to the taxi, he has it in the freezer to freeze dry. He said it will be at least 6 months before it's ready.

Buying the velvet tan you have to inject it with a needle. They say you can just brush it on and it will soak in but after mine failed I talked to a couple other people who all said it needs to be injected to work.

If you have to inject it depends on how early in the season. I they are soft, then yes you should inject the solution. I've done a couple of spike elk where the velvet was firm and not spongy. In both cases I just brushed on the tanning solution. Making sure that I saturated the velvet. Then I wrapped the spikes in plastic wrap and let it set for a couple of days (refrigerated). After a couple of days I took off the wrap and let them air dry.
