Oregon Sled Springs elk tag
« on: October 05, 2017, 11:19:57 AM »
Here in a few weeks I will be heading over for my first rifle elk hunt in Oregon (Sled Springs unit). I was able to head over there a couple months ago and put a few trail cameras up but haven't had the time to go check them out due to a very hectic work schedule😩! Just seeing if there was anyone out there that has hunted it this year for archery or has hunted it in the past? Would love to hear any stories and see some pictures if anyone is willing to share? Thank you

Dad and a few friends hunted the archery season. Very few elk this year where they were. Heat had a lot to do with it.

Wasn't there a big ol cold front that blew through 16-24 September?? Just wondering...

There was. I heard they had snow. That was the week after they returned. Went from 100 degrees to snow pretty fast.

It's been cooler again. 20s @ night - most likely snow some this weekend. I haven't been up there much lately, but I've got 14 branch bulls behind my house acting like the rut just started. The known activity is definitely a couple weeks later than usual.

When I was out there this summer it was super hot but we were able to find some elk. Seen a herd of about 60 with three branch antler bulls, with one decent 5x5. Seen a few other small herds with small bulls nothing big. My plan is to go in on a bike and hunt the brakes of the canyon side and hope to get into elk and find a decent bull to shoot🤞. I also hope my trail cameras turn up some good photos?!

Let me know how your hunt goes.  I'll be over in Starkey unit for the any bull hunt starting on Wednesday.  Can't wait!
