Snow and deer behavior
« on: October 09, 2017, 11:22:13 AM »
Looks like snow will be falling in the area I'll be hunting whitetail this weekend.  Probably not a ton but was wondering if this is more likely to get them up and moving more or keep them quiet.

I love hunting in fresh snow. Quiet for sneaking around, can see where the deer are moving and they are easier to spot. As for their movement, it depends on the time of year, at least from what I have seen. In general, I don't think snow, besides a complete blizzard, really slows their movement.  :twocents:

If anything it might stir them around more especially before the storm, but otherwise, they won’t change their habits much.  Big Boys are still mostly nocturnal.

The snow makes it easy to spot the deer, plus you won't have to worry about the ticks.

a fresh snow is my favorite hunting condition! They stick out like a sore thumb, you can tell pretty easy if theres deer in the area, it gets them up for sure! Make sure you have chains!!

Other than making it easier to track and see how many deer are in an area, and making it easier to spot deer, light snow won't cause a great change in deer behavior.  When it gets deep enough to start covering their food sources, then you will see changes in their activity and where they congregate.  For one thing, they will be more active as they search out food. And if there is a good food source that is still available, more deer will congregate in the area.  They will also feed longer to get their bellies full. That makes them more susceptible to hunting.
