Wyoming Elk Hunt - Updated
«
on:
October 10, 2017, 04:50:34 PM »
Well it's almost time to go - I'm almost packed and I'll be taking off early Friday morning. My son and I have been buying points for eleven years since Wyoming started their draw and this year we applied for tags and were drawn for Area 7. Never having hunted Wyoming before I booked an outfitter and a fully guided and supplied hunt; my first. My son lives in Three Forks Montana (we sent him to MSU for college and he never came home) and that will be the first leg of my drive. On Saturday we'll drive to Wheatland and meet the outfitter. Our seven-day hunt begins on Sunday and to say we are excited is an understatement. I've been lucky enough to get a dozen or so elk in my 30 odd years of hunting them but if my son is fortunate enough to score it will be his first and that is what I'm hoping for. I don't expect to be able to update until I get home but I'll let you know how it turned out then.

Good luck I have 8 points and am thinking of trying to pull a tag. I will be really interested of what you think. I might go with an outfitter as well. Tip over a couple of big ones.

Good luck. Will be watching how your hunt goes. I'm at max points for WY and want to hunt sooner or later.

Done it twice, both times in the unit just west of yours, and it was magical. Archery, then rifle, DIY. My style of hunting requires a couple of friend, or a horse/mule, or a
young
body full of vitality. I have none
, but sitting on 9 points myself. Something chocolate will die in a couple years over there, can't not hunt elk.
Good luck.

Should be a great time, curious which outfitter you picked.

Well I'm back and it was a really good trip. I'll do my best to tell the tale without slow rolling you guys but I have a lot of stuff to sort and put away so I can get back to the routine and get caught up on chores.
We arrived in Wheatland Wyoming on Saturday the 14th in the early afternoon and got situated in the bunkhouse where we would be staying. We met John from upstate New York who would be the other hunter for the week, got acquainted and swapped a few stories and phone pictures. He seemed a decent enough fellow and the days ahead would prove that to be true. The bunkhouse would accommodate up to five hunters with two full bathrooms and showers so with just the three of us we had plenty of room.
As you can see from the pictures, hardship and misery were going to be pretty hard to find on this hunt, at least in camp.

That evening we all went up to the main house where we would have our meals and met the rest of the family and the guides we would be hunting with. I was going to be hunting with Myron, the owner of the outfit. My son Jackson would be hunting with Mike who is Myron's son and John would be hunting with Brady. They explained that we would be hunting ranch properties that were between 45 and 90 minutes by truck from where we were staying. The family either owned or leased the ranches and we were the only hunters that would be on the properties. Jackson and I would be hunting on one ranch, although miles apart and John would be hunting another property. We went over some safety guidelines and were told to get some sleep and be at the house for breakfast at 05:00. If I hadn't been dog tired from a two day road trip I don't think I'd have slept at all that night and I don't think John or Jackson did.
