Any success calling them in??
« on: October 12, 2017, 01:47:45 PM »
I'm headed out Saturday to a spot with descent bear numbers and I think I'm going to give calling a try. This will be my first time trying this method. I'm not gonna lie, I'm a little nervous going out solo and sounding like dying food to a hungry predator.. I'm definitely gonna find a big tree to sit under! Oh, I'm taking my bow and a can of bear spray too..
Anyone else have any luck with calling them in?

I have called in quite a few.  You certainly don't nod off to sleep while calling.  :)  Very exciting way to hunt bears.  Watch the wind.  Me personally I like to put a watch out in front of me and then I call non-stop for at least an hour.  I start off kind of quiet and then if nothing shows up quick, then I increase the volume and the anguish.  Good luck!!!

Many many years ago during rifle deer in the Methow, I accidently called in a bear with a fawn bleat. I was young and not a very experienced hunter and was bored so I thought it was a good idea to blow on this deer call on fawn bleat for an hour. Pretty soon a bear come marching in like no one's business. Might want to try that action.

I have never felt uneasy calling in a bear and I have had them very close on several occasions.  I would be much more scared of encountering a sow with cubs on a trail during the hike in.  With only one exception, the sows with cubs, that I have been able to observe while calling, have sent their cubs up a tree prior to getting close.
Dreams are forever on the mind, realization in the hands.

calling has worked for me and this was my first year for fall bear. My wife and I set up at a medow with berries and called for a while with what we thought was no luck till we started heading down the trail to find another spot and stumbled upon a bear walking right towards us. He didn't seem to care that we were right there about 10 feet from him until we made eye contact and he ran off(I now know it's possible to be 10 feet from a bear and not have a shot and in our inexperienced nervousness of being so close we didn't think to go after him through the thick stuff) in my opinion he was coming towards our calls so don't think there's nothing there when you get discouraged!

I just find a clearcut or a deep draw and start doing cub bawling until I'm blue in the face. Bears are very quiet and stealthy. You might of called one in, but didn't know you did. I don't wear camouflage or use scent eliminator either. It's best to do it in pairs so one can call and the other can watch.
