Top 5 Hunting Innovations
« on: October 26, 2017, 11:37:29 AM »
Heya HuntWA.

I'm working on a little project and would like the opinions from the HuntWA community.

What tools, technologies or innovations have helped advance hunter success the most?
In this case, "hunter success" is defined by a legal & ethical harvest including big + small game, migratory birds, upland or trapping species. Anything from the innovation of black powder from bows and spears, trail cameras, Google Earth, rangefinders, optics, rifle scopes w/ integrated ballistic calculations, camo patterns, GPS, scent control, electric bikes, ground blinds, calls....

Mine in no particular order:
1. Black Powder
2. Trail Cameras
3. Google Earth
4. Range Finders
5. Long range scope optics with integrated ballistic drop

What are your Top 5?

Thanks!

I would replace #4 with spear, and #5 firearms.

Yes, from the origin of the first known hunter up until today. Obviously, technology would be defined differently historically but hope this helps

For those that listed Cartridges, what specifically do you suggest was the innovation?

Improved material design to allow for larger caliber ammo or something different?

Strychnine was used extensively to eliminate wolves many years ago, which allowed the herds to flourish...........and "advanced hunter success" dramatically. ;)

1) Technical hunting clothing (goretex, merino, etc) - allowing hunters to hunter further/longer
2) GPS + Google Earth - pushing the boundaries of how far hunters can go
3) Optic advancement/affordability  - allowing hobbyist the ability to increase accuracy allowing for longer while still ethical kills
4) Production rifle accuracy - many out of the box production rifles are sub MOA due to production/technical improvements
5) Social Networks/Hunter Awareness (Forums such as this one, facebook, instagram)

I should add - maybe an extension of my #5... Hunter advocacy - protecting our public land interests... Without them, we wouldn't have much room to roam.

In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

1.  Soap/shampoo
2.  Razor
3.  Makeup
4.  Lingerie
5.  Cell phone with pic taking capability

I suspect that these innovations may have caused more men to hunt harder than any other.....

1. North American Conservation Model - hard to harvest something that is extinct.
2. Modern rifle (rifled barrel, self contained cartridge, effective projectile)
3. Internal combustion engine - to get to the animals from wherever you live
4. Internet - try learning to hunt from scratch without it
5. ?
