Blacktail late season help???
« on: December 10, 2017, 08:15:45 PM »
Still trying to fill my multi season deer tag. What is the best way to hunt blacktails late season? What kind of baits do they respond to this time of year? I would appreciate any advice or tactics! For Muzzy and archery. Thanks

This weather is about as good as it gets for late bt IMO with the exception of snow. The cold keeps them up and moving and you can actually hear them. I have seen more good bucks outside peak rut in extended periods of cold weather. Than any other weather pattern. Even classic rainy bt weather.  They also seem to get less finicky about eating bait. But I dont have a ton of experience with that.
Focus your baits in areas that hold deer. If you are looking for deer, i would start in areas with a decent sun exposure, good escape cover and low growing blackberrys and moss. I have had excellent luck with Apples.  Wet cob has also worked.  If you know where a buck is post up close to his bedroom along routes that have good cover and transitional vegetation. If you dont have a good idea where your bucks are at this point, then hiking may be your only option trying to get a lead on where a buck is living. Then getting a stand or blind in the aforementioned area and hopefully his stomach over rides his normal wariness somewhat. Good luck!

Also don't be afraid to drag doe urine through the woods , i saw a young buck trailing friday in broad daylight. Clearly on the hunt.

Don’t worry man, I’m out here too still trying to fill my late archery tag. I found a new spot yesterday that has some great looking habitat and even saw a super fat doe. Saw a few rubs too. So here I sit at the gate waiting for another 20 min so I can see to hike in. Usually I like to get to my spot while it’s still dark, but this area is new and the doe I saw was pretty close to the gate actually, so I’m going in just at sun up and should be in my “spot” about 30 min after sun up. I like to creep quietly along the road as I go. I tend to stumble upon quite a few deer that way. The little bits of wet morning grass that grows along the side of the roads makes for a quiet walk. Good luck man!! Hope you get one! I’m feeling like today is my day. These dang blacktails always seem to find a way of beating me!  Haha.. but hey, I’m not at work and I’m outside hunting deer so...
