2017 blacktail season
« on: November 01, 2017, 10:33:19 PM »
To start off a good buddy and hunting partner of mine and I decided we didn't want to tag out opening weekend like last year and the goal for us was a MATURE blacktail !
With 7 days of the very end of the season to hunt!
Several days of going in and not much for deer going on I honestly got lucky on the 28th !

1st shot wasn't the best , I jumped him up and he ran until I hit the grunt tube in which he turned and looked back at me as I squeezed the trigger he squatted and jumped left and my shot went high on his shoulder and off he went down into the timber because for some reason my gun jammed trying to eject the shell
I get text from Turner "big buck " and I responded "bad shot big buck "
I got another round in and dropped down in elevation and started cutting over and into the timber draw to try and intercept him and the 3 Does that were with him

As I got into the timber I could hear them going down the draw and finally I see the Does single file cruising down a small trail and I knew he wasn't far behind.
I saw him about 30+ yards trailing them so I dropped to one knee and right before he got to a gap in some trees I hit the grunt tube and he slowed enough for me to slip one right behind his right shoulder heavy quartering away, he squatted and plowed down the trail !!!
I got on the trail and got to where he was hit at and lots of blood!!!

As I came up to him

So I text Turner and told him buck down
Turner makes over and down and we both are just checking him out

He calls his boy up who was willing to ride up and bring another pack frame to us which is a several hour up hill ride in

One heck of a day
A huge thanks to the Ethan and Erret for the help on getting him boned out and packed down to the rigs

If we would have had the trailer, chances are we wouldn't have needed it. Trailer would have jynxed  us.  :chuckle:

Very solid buck. Looks too warm and sunny to be blacktail hunting!

Super nice buck Jake.  Good follow-up shot while he was on the move too.

Nice job on a beautiful blacktail, and thanks for writing the story. Super difficult to get a shot at a deer when you jump one.
