Too close. The flash is reflecting off the subject. Move it back, or move the bait further away.

You could also put bits of masking tape randomly over the flash if you like those close-ups. Does this happen all through the night or only when there is also some daylight (dusk)

That's the trade off for a good flash range, too much light up close.

You can adjust the IR light on some cameras.

Is that an IR flash cam. I looks like a standard flash. Is so yes to close. If it an IR flash you shouldn't get that at all because they don't flash white. My cams have had elk right up to the cam and it showed a great pic everytime.

Yes your camera is way too close. With todays trail cams you have quite a detection range. However most night shots are going to be of low quality.

Went thru multiple Bushnells that would do this, even if the object was 15’ away.
