Great birds everyone.

My buddy and I scratched out a couple Toms and one Jake up in the Okanogan. Older birds kept hanging up on us and wouldn't finish into range. A change of tactics ....hard loud aggressive calling helped along with adding more decoys. We called my friends in from over 350 yards to with in 30 yards and mine into 40. I love it when they sound off gobble gobble gobble LOL BOOM!
Beautiful markings and color but the neck.... :yike:

After an uneventful youth season and unsuccessful opening weekend I finally got a bird to work for me this morning. Third trip is the charm I guess.

I haven't smacked a turkey in years and just get out and give it a go this year. I went down where I hunt deer in Whitman county and figured I'd give it a shot. I really didn't think I'd tag out because I have terrible luck with turkeys. I got to the very far end of the property and hadn't heard or seen a thing when all of the sudden two sets of Toms lit up right in front of me probably 200 yards out. I got into the shade of a Hawthorne tree and set the decoy out. I called a little and got answers but they wouldn't come. I decided to break the rule and pick up the decoy and get closer. I was able to close about 100 yards and called a little and these birds were really cranking up. I sat for a few minutes and heard nothing but I was able to peak through the grass and I could see 3 Toms heading away from me at 100ish yards. I did a couple of quiet yelps and all of the sudden they were gobbling all over right in front of me but I was atop a cut bank and couldn't see. them. I could just see the head of one disappearing and reappearing a little closer every time. I knew this guy was coming and my heart was pounding. It's been at least 6 years since I've hunted turkeys and I was totally stoked.

All of the sudden there he was maybe 10 yards right in front of me. I didn't have a decoy out this time so I just took the shot rather than risk spooking him. At the shot a whole damn flock of Toms jumped in all directions from behind the cut bank right in front of me. Some took off, some ran, some just stood there staring at me. One decided he'd go beat the crap out of his dying buddy. Holy cow! I couldn't believe it and I only bought one tag this year!! I always buy two but I just never go any more and I suck at turkey hunting so I only bought this one tag.

I weighed him at 19 pounds gutted, 1 1/4 inch on one side and 1 1/8 on the other. 8 1/2" beard.

What an awesome day to chase Toms and what a great way to break the long drought.
