Late Season Camera Location
« on: November 08, 2017, 06:18:53 AM »
So I'm headed out into the hills this weekend for the much needed scouting trip prior to the late season opener. I'm hunting the east side elk (archery). Was wondering what everyone thought about setting up trail cameras. I'm taking 3 cameras with me, maybe some trophy rock/salt.

1. Is there a point in setting up cameras this late?
2. Should I bring salt or should I grab some alfalfa pellets? with snow on the ground or potential snow, would that be a mistake? Corn?
3. Locations... drainages? side hill? I'm new to setting up cameras for late season. Usually only setup for early season, pull cameras mid Oct.
4. Elevation: should I go up, as high as I can? or stay on the lower end? I'm aware that they will start moving towards their winter grounds. And I'm pretty sure where they winter at, because the unit is closed for late season  :chuckle:. I'm also aware that the weather plays a big role in the elevation. But if anyone has experience setting up for late season, please help  :)

Thank you ahead of time!

Mine are all below 4,000 feet on south aspects or in bowls that don't see wind. I mainly use salt, but have used certified weed free alfalfa in the past and it works.

Bring chains. You will be glad you did. A buddy tried getting to our cams yesterday and he couldn't get up to where they are.

I get plenty of good trail cam pics without ever having used any kind of bait.  I've learned to put my cams on high-use game trails, especially where multiple trails cross, and on bedding areas.  The side benefit is that I can see what times of day/night these areas are used and the direction of travel at various times.

Wow, snow level is that low already? Thanks for the heads up. Looks like this years winter started a bit earlier then last year. My thanks! 🙏

Late Archery is going to be a slaughter fest. Lots of elk are headed down according to what I am seeing in the woods.
