Something Special
« on: November 11, 2017, 07:43:27 PM »
I recently made a trip to Montana with my wife and three year old son. We took our travel trailer. We took off a bit early to beat one storm over the passes only to find another storm hit infront of us during the night. This ended up being a two day set back spent in a truck stop waiting for reasonable pass conditions. Mid-day of the third day we checked the pass cams and the looked ok to drive with a truck and travel trailer. After some hairy road conditions and some white knuckles we made it to our hunting area. Our first day hunting my wife passed a few small bucks. That evening I was able to find a nice buck. While dressing our son to be out in the cold for a long stalk some other hunters showed up and the buck slipped into a draw in the distance. My wife and I traded packing our son on the stalk for about 3/4 of a mile. We let him take his favorite  monster truck to help keep his mind occupied. When we got about 400 yards from where I last seen the buck another buck stood up out of his bed at 200 yards. This was a good buck but was a 3x4 so my wife passed him up. We changed our stalk trying to spook this buck in a direction that would not blow our stalk. Well you know how this goes. The buck busted out and ran right up the draw the other buck was in. So I told my wife I was going to run of the ridge and try to get the big buck. So as I crested the hill I expected the big buck to be right In front of me. I caught him 250 yards to my right running up the draw. I yelled a couple times and he stopped so I shot and he dropped then stood back up so I shot again and he went down for good.
The next day we checked out a lot of new country with no luck. We did find a few antelope but the ones on public only had one horn. So we passed.
The third day we found a great buck. My wife wanted to make a stalk on this buck by herself. She has gotten quite a few bucks with me, but never a solo stalk. I was like go get him. I wat he’d as she worked her way thru a few draws and then into position. We had set up some hand signals to let me know to bring our son and my pack board. I was literally shaking excited watching the hunt unfold in the binos. I was excited because this would be her best buck and her first solo stalk. Two shots later I get the signal that the buck was down. What a great buck!
On the drive back to camp we seen a big herd of antelope with 4 bucks in it. We got out and got to 250yards but there was a mix of antelope does and cows around we didn’t feel good with trying to pull a double. We let the antelope feed over the hill and made our stalk. When we came over the ridge they were 150 yards away feeding. So my son screams at them :chuckle: And the herd is off and running. Again I told my wife I was going to run to cut them off. I caught up with them and took a yards. And went on several solo stalks getting into 230 or less but not getting a shot opportunity she felt good with.
