Son's first deer
«

After about a mile and a half walk into some timber yesterday morning, we found a nice little knob to sit up on watch over a recent log job. A good buddy of mine had seen a little 3 point just the other day chasing a doe around, so we knew that there might be some rut activity starting up. With my youngest handling the rattle bag, my oldest manned the grunt tube as well as the rifle. Only 20 minutes into the action, I noticed a tail flicker in the tree line about 300 yards out. I got the binocs on it, and saw we had a dandy of a 4 point coming in hot. He spared no time coming into the open, grunting right back at us. I was finally able to get my son lined up on the buck, presenting only a straight on shot at 200 yards. Buck fever was running rampant through my boy, and couldn't manage to get a confident mark on the deer. The buck slipped back into the tree line, but didn't seem spooked. I was able to glass him through the trees, and noticed as if he was almost chasing something off. We slipped down the knob, and made our way into the tree line. Just as we got to an old skid trail lane, we saw this buck standing in the clearing 30 yards away. My son quickly pulled up the rifle, clicked the safety off and drilled it. One shot with the Ruger .270 and 150 grain Nosler Partitions, and it was laying 50' from where he shot. I couldn't be more proud of my boys, and I'm looking forward to many more of these memories to come.
