Slug/Buckshot gun

I’m debating on what to use for thick cover deer in a firearms restricted area.   I’m toying with the idea of using an over/under with a rifled choke tube in one barrel (slug), I/C or Mod maybe full choke in the other (Buckshot).  I’d like to add rifle type sights or maybe a red dot type sight but it would have to mount on the vented rib.


Anyone have a setup like this?

I took a doe this year with a single shot 20 gauge this year using Winchester Slugs. If you shoot skeet or clays then you shouldn't  need rifle sights or red dot sights but if you want to, go for it

I'd go 20 gauge bolt action with a low power scope. Recoil with 12 gauge slugs is brutal, and buckshot in my opinion is not going to be very effective on deer unless you're within about 40 yards or so.

depends on the slugs bobcat, you don't have to use 1 oz magnum slugs.  There are lighter versions available.

savage makes bolt action shotguns for slug hunting and are suppose to be very accurate

You can get sights that clamp on a rib.  Regulation could be an issue(both barrels shooting to the same point of aim)just because it shoots close with shot slugs and buckshot seem to have a mind of there own.  The only way you know it will work is to try it.  you might have to sight it for one barrel and remember the hold off for the other.

I’m not really looking to add another gun to the armory.  For long range accuracy I use a scoped muzzle loader.  I’m looking for something here for inside 40 yards but also with the ability to accurately place a slug at maybe 100 yards. 

I’ve taken deer before with shotgun off the bead; looking for a bit more accuracy here.

Thanks.  I hadn't considered the barrel regulation.  I should sight in the slug barrel and find how for off the other one lands.

I would choose slugs over buckshot. Get a rifled 870 or Savage. If you never plan to be use it on elk get a 20 gauge, otherwise get a 12. With a scope you should be good to 125 yards or further. You can get light recoil loads for both 12 and 20 gauge that work well for deer.

There is only one buckshot load we have found to always produce killing patterns out to ~60 yards.  Federal Flight Control buck.

I have not deer hunted with my home poured and stacked buckshot, but it does a number on coyotes. I stack my 0 buck inside a 2 3/4" trap shotshell. The wad prevents the buckshot from spinning down the barrel. I've killed coyotes out past 60 yards with it.

I picked up a browning a bolt 12 not that long ago. It shoots great! Recoil is mild compared to some of the guns I’m use to shooting. Getting about 1-1.5” groups at 100. Plink steel at 200 with it as well. It’s a hoot!

Start w/just the sights.  Try Breneks and Remington Sluggers for a foster slug out of a mod and full choke.  Sometimes a gun likes another Foster better, but that Slugger is usually the best for us.  IDK if you will beat that with a sabot and rifled tube and a foster or a Brenek may really surprise you out of a bird gun.  2 inches at 50 yards is pretty common. 

My experience with those tubes and Fosters is the first one fills up all the groves with lead w/o giving much, if any, accuracy improvement.

I have to decide which gun to go with.  Have it narrowed down to a CZ Upland Ultralight or a Browning Citori.  The Browning is a heavy trap edition, adjustable comb, 30" ported barrels; it would tame the recoil but I don't know if I can bring myself to take it into wet, brushy deer country and get it scratched up.

The reduced recoil slugs have plenty of punch.  I would try them in the CZ.

6lbs vs 9lbs - the CZ would be lot easier to carry around.

The sights are universal.  I'll order them 1st and I can switch them if I want.

Don't compromise on the buck shot, Federal Flight Control.  It will be hard to find, but the stuff is so much better you want to make the effort.

Fired 2 slugs from the CZ and quickly decided that I never want to do that again.  ,    I can handle recoil but my cheek went numb for a while.

I think that I’ll stick with my A5 for slugs and give up the selective fire slug/buckshot idea.

Ive hunted in RI alot which is a shotgun only state for gun season. Ive cleanly killed the most deer there with smooth bore 18-20 inch barreled shotguns. Before they outlawed buckshot a few years ago I would load my pumps and semi's slug first then 00 buck. Although only a few times did I shoot twice. Those laurel thickets are a doozy
