HELP
« on: March 04, 2009, 04:00:01 PM »
My German shorthair pointer started limping a little yesterday and today he will not even step on his front paw. I looked just now at his paw and it looks like it is raw in between his toes. I'm going to go and wash it and then put some neosporin on it and then bandage it so he can't lick it off. I do not have money for a vet or I would take him in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My Black Lab has gotten the same thing several times, Took him to the Vet and was given some anti-bacterial salve and also some antibiotics. Didn't do much good. Check real close for any foreign object(s).

Man that sucks.  Poor guy.  If it gets worse, he'll need to be seen.  Watch for signs of infection.  Swollen, warm(er) to the touch, increased area of redness.  Hope he heals quickly.

was he running on ice or asphalt? That can make them get raw and sore. You can get Novalsan paste at your farm store which is basically the same antibotic which you'll pay a fortune for at the vet. It is blue and gooey. You'll find it in the horse section. Probably about $15. Get a roll or two of "vet wrap" when you're there....it breaths and isn't sticky to their hair.

If it gets swollen, go to the vet, tell them you're really broke and they'll usually work out a low cost bill and let you make a few payments...Been there done that.....Hap...

I took him out with me looking for sheds on Monday and he ran like crazy so he has been on the snow and ice and could even have a sliver. He doesn't like me looking at it but I'll hold him and make sure nothing is in there when I get back from the store with the paste stuff. I'll check back here in an 30 min. or so before I apply it. Thank you for the help.

Give him a childs dose 1 tsp of childrens tylenol and that should help with the pain and also he may let you look at it better  :twocents: Call a vet though first and see if it is something they would recomend, Information is cheap !!  ;)

Hope he starts to feel better !!!

his pads are probably rubbed raw from the snow/ice/etc.
is he used to that type running around? if his pads are soft the snow will tear them up.

EMT gel works well, but just like what was said above, make sure you clean it well and there isn't anything in there.

I use Bactracin (Sp?) (I get it from the hospital) its an antibiotic cream like neosporin...He is going to want to walk on it..I put a sock over it and duct tape to keep it clean if he has to go outside.  I used to use DMSO on lots of things but not anymore.  Bag Balm can also help.  Just keep an eye on it and if it does get bad take him in to the vet..get the medicine and ask to make payments my last tube of ear infection cream from my vet was $8.00.  YOu can call the vet and ask what it would cost advice is free.  Good Luck.

Most likely just from the ice crystals. Probably raw. keep his activity level low until he's feeling better...go to the vet if anything seems really out of place, he vomits, pants excessively or won't drink water. His gums should be pink. Touch them with your finger and the spot will return pink right away. It indicates his blood pressure is normal. If you ever see grey gums with no color and panting=vet time...

My dog gets the same thing. I am not sure what causes it or if it gets itchy and he licks it out of bordem. He has been on antibiotics for it before. He has got is since though. I was told by the vet last time to have him stand in warm water in the tub of epsom salt, this also helps pull stuff out, if there is anything and helps soothe.
So, I do that and then dry it well...spray with Shriners(sp)
http://www.schreiners.com/PETS_SITE/Pets_care_dogs.htm

You can get it at the farm supply store in the horse area. I wouldn't bandage it, warmth causes bacteria to grow and will make it worse. The shriners works awesome and they won't lick because, it is nasty!!

Good luck, I hope he is better soon :-)

just keep it clean and put more neo on it and he will be fine , but if there is something in is paw i would see if you can get it out , i had a pitbull once that stepped on some broken glass and had a bad cut in is paw never took him to the vet because they rape you on the bills , so i just kept his paws clean and bandaged it up and put neo on it and he was fine

Well, I don't know if he had a cold or what. I cleaned his paws real good and couldn't see any difference between them. I put some neosporin on them and wrapped them up but he pulled the wrap off after an hour. The stuff the pet store sold me was for cleaning (should have read it at the store but the guy told me it works great for infections:I returned it today). Then he laid down and started shivering so I put a towel under him and another over. He was still like that this morning when I let him out. Then around 10 I went to check on him and he had eaten all his food and water and was exited to see me. I let him out and he ran all over. He's been doing great all day. I wish I could heal that fast. Still wondering why he didn't want to step on that paw. He still licks it but not like before. I'm going to just keep him in for a while out of the weather. Thanx for the help.
