My golden retriever sometimes gets what the vet called "interdigital dermititis" or hotspots.  The symptoms were red, moist irritated skin inbetween her toes that she would constantly lick.  The first time she got it I took her to the vet and we got antibiotics (cha-ching) the next time she got it I trimmed the hair out between the toes and tried my best to keep her from licking and it went away on its own.  She has gotten it a few more times and each time it stays for a couple of days, we trim the hair, and it goes away, dont know why she gets them, but we just keep an eye on it and if it doesnt get any better after about 5 days or if it takes a drastic turn for the worse, its vet time.  I have heard that they are sometimes caused by allergies, usually from their food, and that the lamb and rice varieties are supposed to be helpful in preventing hot spots.  We switched and it hasn't happened since but it hasnt been all that long since the last one either though.
