The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a Vancouver elk hunter who went missing in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

Joel Presler, 37, was hunting in the Forlorn Lakes area of the forest, according to a news release. He last spoke to his family on Saturday.

Deputies found Presler’s 2004 Ford pickup on Wednesday on Forest Road 6035. There are about two feet of snow on the ground near the vehicle, and it doesn’t appear Presler has been in or around his truck in the past couple of days.

According to the sheriff’s office, it’s unlikely he would hike in and camp away from his vehicle.

Presler has hunted around the area for many years and has no known medical issues. Today’s forecast calls for an additional 6 to 10 inches of snow and temperatures are falling.

Search operations are headquartered at the junction of Forest Road 24 and Forest Road 60 near the Peterson Prairie campground.

UPDATED 1 MINUTE AGO

STEVENSON, WASH.
Teams are searching by foot and by snowmobile for a 37-year-old elk hunter reported overdue in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

Skamania County Sheriff Dave Brown says the hunter, Joel Presler, of Vancouver, last had contact with his family on Saturday.

Authorities found his pickup truck on Wednesday on a Forest Service road in the Forlorn Lakes area. There's about 2 feet of snow there, and there was no sign that Presler had been to the truck in the past couple of days.

Thursday's forecast called for an additional 6 to 10 inches of snow.

Presler is reported to have been in good health and to have hunted in the area for years. Authorities don't believe he would have hiked in and camped away from his truck.
Some animals WERE harmed in the making of this Hunter. They were also dragged through the dirt, butchered and tasted delicious fried with butter and bacon.

I was in that area on Saturday....the roads and weather were pretty bad. I actually tried to get up to Forlorn lakes but had to turn back because my truck wasn't high enough. Hope he's found.

Sad ending.  Glad the family doesn't have to wonder until spring or beyond.

He was only 100 to 150 yards from his truck.  Wearing only his shirt, pants and boots.  His coat, hat and backpack were about 50 yards from his body.  Hypothermia.  :(

Sounds like paradoxical undressing. Fairly common in freezing victims.
