My 1st Montana mule deer hunt
« on: November 22, 2017, 11:10:21 AM »
Figured I'd post a little story and a few pics from my Montana hunt last week. We arrived in the area we were going to hunt Saturday late afternoon with just enough time to hit some roads and get a look at the land. Started to see that everyone else was cruising as well. Little disappointed but we saw a few deer, even a few small bucks. After it got dark we found a suitable place to setup camp and unloaded the truck. After laying out the poles for the wall tent we quickly found out a few pieces were missing to erect the frame! Oh no. That meant load the truck back up and sleep in the cab!

Next morning we went for a hike again passing up a few small bucks and seeing hunters cruising the road everywhere. Not a lot of people out hiking around but we also weren't seeing the deer numbers we wanted to see so we went exploring. Got to a new area and saw a lot of deer! Passed up quite a few 4x4s which is hard being from this state lol. Darkness fell and again we slept in the cab. We had made a game plan for the next morning.

Next morning we went on a 7.5 mile loop seeing deer in every pocket almost. Tons of bucks just not quite what we were looking for this early in the hunt. We made it back to the road and decided to.see if our guns were on in the prairie dog town. Had some fun for a little while and continued back to the truck, but walked a draw 200yds from the road. Immediately we jumped some does and a 4x4 at 50yds! That got my heart racing and I didn't size him up very well but decided o wanted to Take him. He ran up the hill on other sides and my hunting partner missed him and I took a shot too and also missed, but heard a thump which made me 2nd guess the miss. We made it up to the next drawer where they ran but only saw the does running out to the south. My partner headed that way and I headed north up the draw and hoping to see where he crossed and possibly find blood. Few hundred yards later I see him bedded I'm some trees. Dang I did hit him i thought. I laid prone and ranged him 166 yds and he stood up and I put him right back down. Buddy came up to me and I told him I had hit him on the first shot and he was bedded right there. When we got over to him we found out that he wasn't injured he just decided to bed lol! I was a little disappointed at first  because it was so early in the hunt but he's my biggest buck to date and I am very happy with him! My buddy ended up with a nice 4x4 with kickers on each sidee that same evening and we made it home tuesday!
