Oh I thought “bros” meant more than 1 for some strange reason...

The point about “your specs”  has nothing to do with your builds...  just saying a person  has unlimited options building whatever they’re little heart desires, but less than 1/2 price. Dunno why I mentioned that as most  folks can’t mount and boresite a scope, let alone source they’re own part for a custom build...

I can't help myself here.  257 WBY, There is no way that you can build a complete custom rifle for half the cost.  Rbro's doesn't charge nearly what other companies do and you get a lot more for your money.  Look at how much some other companies are charging and doesn't come with load development.  All gunsmiths aren't created equal either.  It's pretty easy to add up the cost of the parts.  Only way i could see someone saving money is using a donor Rem 700 action that would need to be trued.

You are comparing a Remington build to a custom build.   Add up the cost of the exact components and the labor to put it together and it's definitely not half the price.   I do parts builds all the time for guys on both Remington and customs.   Guys using existing actions or less expensive custom actions can save a little money sourcing their own parts, but I set my pricing of components for separate sales the same as you would pay from the manufacturer.  Plus, I don't charge extra for breaking in, accuracy testing and load data, even on customer supplied parts builds.

This thread is a good idea from the op as it gives me an idea of other items to keep in inventory so I have most options covered for guys.  The new shop has much larger capabilities now and can utilize the new cnc machines to make other parts, bolt fluting, etc.   Once I get things settled in I may do a bolt fluting deal for guys.

Being large enough to stock parts is huge. Why wait 9 mo for a defiance action when Rbros has a customized version ready on the shelf?  Glad to see them doing carbon now.

I know I can safely say once I've got the money saved up, and RBros rifle will reside in my home, and will be the last gun I'd ever NEED to buy

That's why I put need all upper case, I'll never stop wanting guns, or buying em, and I'll probably always use the "I need it for this" excuse  :chuckle:

Love mine. Worth every penny!
Defiance action.
.338 edge shooting 300 SMK's ahead of a midline dose of H1000 at 2900 fps. Uncanny accurate, 1/2-3/4's at 300 if I do my part. Rockchucks at 1500 yards is a hoot!
That's what you get with a full custom
I think a Carbon Hunter in .264 Win would be fun👍

I've seen a few kids try to cobble together off the shelf rifles and claim sub  MOA rifles.  On their best days they might eek out 1- MOA 3 shot group.
A custom rifle will hold is accuracy over the life of the barrel, or in the case of my 6.5, barrels.

It's likely that those "kids" could have used a little guidance from an experienced shooter to make the most of their equipment. I've only ever owned 2 factory rifles that wouldn't hold better than MOA with factory ammo; with handloads they both ended up under the 1 MOA mark. I've cobbled together enough parts guns to know that just about any good barrel on a decent action in a mediocre stock with an adequate trigger is capable of .5 MOA performance with the right load. :twocents:

Custom guns are just like brand new luxury cars; the vast majority of them are sold to "name droppers". I've owned and shot enough custom guns built by top name smiths to know that most of what you pay for is attention to detail, just like with luxury cars. You get the folks who go out and buy a brand new custom rifle (or car), show all their friends and tell all of the inter-webs about their new toy and how much it cost or what an elite group they're in for owning it. Then there's the groups of people who will drool and pour over how they dream of having something like that one day but they just don't have the funds. The new owner will follow up with a humble brag about how they've saved and sacrificed but they know that the quality's worth the expense.

Then come the self identified "realistic/practical" folks who will point out that you can get the same performance for a fraction of the cost by going a different route. Whether that comes from a do-it-yourself project or using a lesser known but still highly proficient professional. They end up with comparable performance for significantly less money, but without the "name dropper" appeal or all of the flair. The "name dropper" crowd will be in an uproar and come to the defense of the name they're most loyal to. This will be followed by the realistic/practical crowd pointing out that it's all marketing hype and brand loyalty.

Somewhere in the mix is the rare individual who's really capable and willing to take full advantage of the attention to detail that you pay for with a high end piece of equipment. The number of shooters who're really capable of shooting beyond the capabilities of their rifles is pretty small, just like the number of drivers who're really capable and willing to take advantage of what their car is really capable of. Pay for the name, logo or complimentary hat and associated SWAG if that's your thing. Or pay for the usable performance at a price that makes sense for the end user's needs. I've gone both routes before with rifles and cars and I'm dumb enough to fall for it again with both rifles and cars.

As far as the original post, I've always been fond of the LW Hunter. Maybe in something like 300 WSM.

I told my wife last week that I need to buy the 4ywar old son a rifle.  Make sure I get it all set up.  She saw right threw that one.  I just have a hard time buying new scopes.

Easily done.  Did a handful of those and 270's this year.   Both shoot the Hornady Precision Hunter ammo in one hole
