Montana deer hunt story (crazy)
« on: November 27, 2017, 06:52:29 AM »
Thought the story of my dad's deer was too good not to share. Myself, my old man and greenhead_killer went to western Montana after whitetails. GHK was able to put a great buck on the ground Tuesday night. Friday morning I was able to kill a solid buck that was a ways back in. My old man and GHK hiked in and helped my quarter and pack out my buck. On the hike out, we had my dad pack my rifle since he still had a tag in his pocket. He kept joking that he wasn't gonna kill something way far away from the truck and we actually saw some deer hiking out but he just shook his head and smiled.

We finally got back to the trucks around 1:00 and got everything out of our packs and chatted for a bit about the plans for the rest of the day. Where we park the trucks is along a powerline cut with timber on both sides. As I was eating my sandwich I mentioned to GHK that in the past, we used to see a lot of deer crossing the powerline cut both in front and behind the truck. It couldn't have been a minute later and we looked down the clearing and saw three deer running right at us. When we first saw them, they were on the opposite side of the mainline road about 250 yards away. We assumed that something had spooked them but they kept running directly at us. As they closed the distance we could see the glint of antler on the back deer. At this point, it became a scramble as my dad hurried to grab his rifle. As the first doe got to about 40 yards I could see her tongue hanging out so the buck had been running them for a bit. At that point the two does took a quick turn and cut into the timber at about 30 yards. The buck slammed on his brakes from which I assume finally noticing the two trucks and three ugly guys standing there. At that moment a shot rang out and he just flinched and a second later, bolted for the trees. Another shot rang out as he disappeared into the trees. We all stood there in disbelief at what just happened and also that my old man just missed at like 40 yards. GHK and I, still eating my wrap mind you, walked over to check for blood. We got over and didn't see anything then I saw some blood and then from that point was the biggest blood trail I have ever seen. It looked like someone walked and poured blood out from a bucket. About 30 yards in, there he laid.

All we could do is high five and laugh at the circumstances. Talk about a crazy few minutes and it's something I am sure we all will never forget.
