Wood Arrows
« on: March 05, 2009, 12:38:47 PM »
I see a lot of different wood. Cedar, fir, pine etc. What's the best?  My recurve is 57lb.
I see alot of shafts that are 50-55lb  31 inch.  By shortening these shafts to 28 inch will it give more spline weight?  Would I be ok shooting these?

I am guessing your draw length is somewhere around 27.5 inches because you said you wanted to shorten the arrows to 28 inch or so. I have not shot anything but Port Orford Cedar and always with good results.

This arrow selection chart has been reliable for me. http://www.3riversarchery.com/pdf/WoodChart.pdf

That would make the arrow weight you have suggested a little bit light for a recurve of 57lb with that length of arrow shooting a 125 grain tip. What are you using for a broadhead?

Like Ray, I have only shot port orford cedar shafts. They shoot well. I shot the 11/32 shaft at 55# out of my recurve with a 28" draw. I would go with the arrows that are spined at 55-60#. The 50-55# spine sound like they would be under spined for your setup.
