Mounting optics on a 30-30

I'm not sure what the desire of optics are on a caliber that is a 150 yard maybe 200 yard gun.

I think with the Leverevolution ammo, these could be 200 yard guns. I'd rather have a crosshair than the open sights, I've never been a good open sight shooter anyways....

Even without pointed bullets, I have no problem banging a 6" steel plate at 225 yards and shooting a respectable group at 300 with a scoped 30/30.  I would not hesitate to take a deer sized animal out to 250 - 300 yards but I'd never try that far with iron sights.

The reason he decided not to mount the optics is a combination of difficulty, lowering his perceived value (turns out his rifle is from the 1950's), and that he'd probably just get a bolt-action and mount a scope if he really wants to go the distance...

The argument for it: it's the only gun he currently owns!

i've got a 2.5x scope on my .45-70, i'm nearsighted so it's nice to be able to have fast, non blurry target acquisition.

Good call IMO, but that wasn't the question.

I know he asked about mounting a scope, but why not a Lyman or Williams Peep Sight instead?
It would not take away value and when used properly can be vary effective.
I grew up hunting with a family friend who used his 30-30 with peep sight and was very good at taking deer.

#2 on this one - Seen too many a buggered '94 selling gathering dust on the shelf of a dealer for a couple hundred. On second thought - its a 1970's model? Go for it!

I've got a Marble's tang peep on my old 94, and I love it.

I have a similar '94 I'm toying with doing something with.

There are side mounts that don't require any drilling.

Came across this. Don't know anything about the company, but an interesting mount. No drilling required.

Wow, pretty ingenious - looks from the pics tho that the rear sight has to be replaced with a "dovetail stud" for the front screw mount. Don't know if I'd like having to delete the rear sight.

If you look at the picture of the rail under the video or watch the video it shows the rail having a rear sight integrated into it

That's a pretty slick deal.  There are some very creative people out there making products.  Wish I could find something like this for an old 30-30 bolt gun of my wife's that I do not want to have to drill....
