223 ammo for coyotes
« on: December 15, 2017, 04:45:57 PM »
What off the shelf ammo do you guys shoot for coyotes?  I've shot a few different brands and hornady 53gn vmax and black hills 55gn vmax both  shoot pretty good out of my 20" 1:8 RRA.  I think I'm going to try a little heavier bullet and see if it helps with accuracy.

I say whatever softpoint shoots well out of your gun.   Rifling twist would m$atter for bullet weight.

I like to shoot a little heavier bullet for coyotes at distance out past 300 yards. It cuts down on the spinners with a less than perfect hit. Up close when calling I like the light V-Max's.

Across the board I prefer a bullet in the 60' ish grain range.

I’ve only shot a couple with vmax bullets but I’d say yes.

Off the shelf hornady 55 grain softpoints ,minimum pelt damage with good expansion and good killing power, call me old fashioned , but I think vmax is over rated , and over priced but do work well.

Reloading I will be loading some 75gr Sierra hollow points for 25/45 with as much powder it takes to send it 3000 fps.

V-Max's flat smoke Coyotes, serious terminal damage. Much more so than the Nosler varmint Ballistic Tips. I agree with the soft points mentioned. They are much more  fur friendlier. I run soft points when spotlighting Bobcats because I care about the pelts. Coyotes, I could careless, I used to walk out and get every coyote I shot just to check it out. Bullet damage, size of the dog etc. Now I just smoke them and let them lay on the wheat field or CRP and move on.

One less fawn/calf killer. A guy gets tired of sitting and waiting for cattle to calve so the coyotes don't get them. My bro was was camping out on one of his Wagyu's to calve the other day because there's been way too many coyotes around. The coyotes group up around here come winter, singles aren't a problem.
