Dog Blind

Been thinking about buying a dog blind for duck hunting. My 85lb yellow lab is good at sit/staying but tends to sit outside the blind for better visibility. She’s young enough to train to hunt out of a blind. Any tips for training? Any recommendations for a dog blind to fit a big lab?

I uses a FA one that I have had forever.  My one male is just over 100lb.  Surprising how small of a blind they will fit into in the field.  I just use the word kennel to get them in it.  Use stay to keep them in the kennel.

I usually run the rig'em right field bully blind. My guy is 75 lbs and tall. He goes in and then out the back to turn around and watch the field. When I don't have to pack in I run him out of the momarsh (heavy) and he can turn around inside. I like the ghg ground force blind and will probably get one this year or next cause it's lighter to pack than the rig'em right by a little bit and I think would strap onto my pack frame better.

I have been looking at the FA Mutt Hutt 2 but it's pricey for what it is, but 5 lbs would be nice for a long pack. This the one you are running Tony?

Yes, I run the FA Mutt Hutt.  Good blind system.

I have the tanglefree optifade marsh dog blind. Good to have better camo so you don't need to brush it up as much. Easy set up with two thumb screws that always stay in so you wont lose them.

When it was new I kept it inside and let the dog hang out in it while he was in the living room with treats for going in and staying in. Once he was steady to gunfire and he KNEW that he wasn't supposed to go until he was sent, that training translates easy to the dog blind by throwing marks and making them honor with the E-collar.  This will only work if they know better obviously and are steady to gunfire and marks.

I usually try to let my partner take the first bird of the day because my dog will usually still try to break. if I am not shooting and can catch him doing it and zap him good for it he will usually behave the rest of the day.

h2ofowler and my system are one in the same, except that my Lab is 10 lbs smaller.
 Most dog blinds are pretty high profile so do not work well in field unless you can scape out a hole to set them in or are lucky enough to have some good cover nearby.  Talking hunting geese out of layout blinds.
Years ago, my 65 lb CBR used to share my X-Lander with me. It was a bit snug, but it can be done.

I've trained a few labs to use a mut hut. Practice, practice practice but do it pre season at home. My reward for them was always playing fetch w/them using the mut hut. Now I simply say "get in the blind" and they're in there like a shot.
