Frustrating yet cool
« on: December 25, 2017, 05:04:50 PM »
I watched a pack of 6 coyotes tree a cougar.  No camera, no gun.  I was able to share some of it with my wife and girls between spotting scopes and binos.

I was looking for wolves.  I actually thought I’d found two.  They were sitting on a fold (ridgeline) stoically looking downhill while sitting.  I spotted movement below.  Then I spotted another animal sitting down on their haunches on the same ridgeline, down below them.   I was honestly trying to determine if I was watching wolves or coyotes.  Still not exactly positive, but going to call them coyotes.  They were really focused on what was below them, almost as if they were on the hunt.  I finally focused on the animal down below.  He’ll, that’s a cat.    It didn’t make sense.  Then the canines started closing in on the cat.  On a side note, one of them was skidding down the hill on their ass like  a dog would with pinworms” still dont know what was going on there.   They started closing in on the cat.  The cat took off making a bee line for the trees.  6 coyotes hot on his tail.  Very cool to watch.  My family got to watch a lot of it unfold though it was difficult having them each takes turns trying to find the animals and to understand what was happeneing.   Unfortunately we had other holiday commitments as I knew where there was a cat treed.

Very cool. Wonder if they had caught the cat on the ground if that many would have been enough to kill the cat.

Coyotes aren't stupid and they don't want hurt so I doubtful that would happen.

I know coyotes tend to smear crap everywhere when they get mixed up with a cat, they really start marking and poo'n, and challenge barking.

Were you too far away to hear any barking Bone?

I had watched three wolves steal a kill from a cat in the same general area.  Still not sure about coyotes.  A lot of behavior there I didn’t have sorted out.   I thought they were harassing the cat on a kill, but when they converged, if they were bluffing, I’m impressed.

The oddest part of that encounter would have to be, Bone and 'no camera,' too bad for all of us. That would be some cool pics, but seeing it first-hand would really have been an interesting experience.

Very cool and thx for sharing

GREAT story, especially in the details you noticed.

I am impressed again with your ability to tell what you observed with the humility to tell it straight, no pretending to be omniscient about why the animal did what he did and what it meant.

That dog sliding down the hill on his but probably did have ringworm or another parasite, like e. granulosus. It's one of the many diseases that wolves commonly carry. It passes on through contact with its feces, as you know.
