Cant say where i was but...
« on: December 31, 2017, 05:04:26 PM »
I dont think ive ever seen this many late season  big pheasants... Usually its my dad, bro and I with our two shorthairs and setter but we were able to bring my wife and 5 month old son, sister, bro in law and mom for a quick two day trip... my dad bro and i the only ones hunting.. The rest of the fam likes tagging along and watching us shoot birds  :) anyway, long story short, we saw lots of birds... looked like south dakota at times! They were spooky though which makes them even funner to hunt. on the down side, my dads 4.5 year old shorthair had about a 4 minute siezure out in the field... vet thinks it could of been low blood sugar.. anyone have this happen before? i know we haven't and that dates back to my great grandpa. anyways, its always fun and cant wait for next year already... and btw, we pulled the two big tail feathers out of the birds b/c we keep them so they might not look as big as they are hahah

Great pics!  I voted too.  :)

And regarding the GSP, my brother's GSP would get disoriented and it was like he couldn't see and just act strange at times. Usually it would happen after a couple hours of hard hunting after chukars.  Feeding him a couple of candy bars (the ones with peanuts.......can't remember the name right now) and he would snap out of it.  We figured it was low blood sugar too.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

yeah our shorthair was acting weird too. he had his legs spread out wide like he was scared of something. it happened in october as well but he didnt have a seizure so we carried him to the truck. we had some blood tests on him today so hopefully they will be ok.

Paydays! I often had them, for myself. But when the shorthair was walking in circles and probably about to collapse, he'd gobble up one Payday and within minutes was back to normal and ready to hunt. I think at that point we'd head back to the truck and call it a day.

I always carry and feed high protein dog snacks during the hunt. Also, the pure honey sticks dripped over a dog snack seem to solve any problems.

Unfortunately, things like chocolate and raisins found in human energy bars can be deadly to dogs:
