I would get a swing away so you can lift your hatch without unloading the carrier, and don't over load it like I see folks doing.  Be nice to have it wired with some lights too.

sounds like it's not big enough already.

 When I drove an expedition I used one to transplant stray raccoons and cats. A big boar would shake the truck when on the back. You have to be aware of it when backing. 

It also works quite well to put coyotes on to transport.

What I was thinking about was to have it folded up, drive around do my thing, come lunch time fold it down, open back and sit there with feet on rack. and/or change boots there rain gear? or maybe throw a stinkin coyote on there if I am in a contest. So far I am liking it a lot.

If you need more room they work well. You can keep it inside the back and use it when needed for game to keep the inside clean, several of my guides have used them. Just don't forget it's on when turning around in tight spots! 

If you install a receiver on the front they actually work very well in front. Of course they are kind of a redneck thing, not sure how they would be viewed in populated areas?

I use one for hunting/camping.   

My woods vehicle is a Hummer H3, and the thing has been a lifesaver.

I've had two cow elk on mine....... and they don't fit in my H3.

I use mine for hauling deer about 20 miles to our camp from the trailheads to our camp.I also have a roof rack but 200#s of deer isn't too easy to to get up that high.I like to put firewood from windfalls along the road to camp,too.For $40s its a no brainer that its better than hauling a trailer around during a week or more for hunting and a heck of a lot easier than messing up your rig with a lot of blood and horns punching holes in your seats.The buck on the tarp in my garage I took in 2004 and he rode home wrapped in the tarp on my reciever rack.I took him in the Methow and that was 5 hours of driving and the meat was fantastic.I aged him at 5yo , 300#s and tender as veal.pcal

They work great for hauling deer/keeping inside vehicle clean, How I get salvage deer home, plus much lower to lift a whole animal onto then into bed of truck when solo.

You can get away with the genny but a cooler is likely going to give you sway on your trailer over 60-65 mph likely.  Just a difference of 50 to 100# is a lot back their typically.  Doesn't hurt to try just be on the lookout for it.  Depends how your tanks are loaded also - might work full/empty but not vice versa.

I have a steel one and use it a lot. But I have a Nissan Frontier. On short weekend trips I use it. If you wants lights , magnetic tow lights work great on them and you can use the lights for other things.

I made a steel one, big enough that I could haul a motorcycle on. It is really handy for hauling big bulky stuff like coolers and totes, and if you can’t fit all your stuff in the vehicle it can save you from towing a trailer.

I have a steal one I only use when hunting. It is preaty heavy, if I was going to do it again I would buy the aluminum one with the 4-6 in. sides. They hold just as much.

Just an FYI.  I was going to do the same with my travel trailer but the dealer strongly advised against it.  Apparently those bumpers aren't really built to handle a lot of cantilevered weight.  At least that's what he claimed.  I haven't consulted the manufacturer yet.

I also looked into it and it's a bad idea, the frames aren't meant for weight bouncing around out there.  I think it should hold a small genny, but you could also just put the generator above the propane tanks up front.  They got some neat little stands for that.
