Lyman 1000 scale reading heavy, how do I fix it?!
« on: January 03, 2018, 07:12:35 PM »
So I picked up a pretty old Lyman powder scale, the pro 1000, new in box at a gunshow  a few months back, now that my reloading room is done, I have been attempting to use it.

Problem is, everything weighs .3-.5 grains heavy on the scale. I have a lee scale, and a Lyman digital scale that will agree with another every time, but the Lyman beam never does. I have leveled the scale using the foot, cleaned the agate bearings, made sure the knife edges are sharp, and burnished them with some graphite, and cleaned the beam.

I don't have standards here, they are on the way. I borrowed standards and checked the digital and the lee, before I unpacked and realized the Lyman had an issue, and both were right on, as they have always been in the past.

Anyone have an idea of what's going on with it?

Is it off .3-.5 at all weights or one specific?  I assume by leveling that you are zeroing it and then your chosen weight is off .3-.5?  If you can zero it then the relative amount of variance should vary as a consistent percentage of the load or chosen weight.

It seems to be off .3-.5 through the weights I've checked.
4.2g, 125.6g, 251.3g are the 3 weights I've run.

I've been playing with it more, and it almost seems like as it settles down, the magnetic dampner "catches", and holds it slightly high.

It does not do it at zero though, just at weight?

I use the thumb screw to level the scale to establish zero.
