Deer or Elk hunt in Utah
« on: January 07, 2018, 04:24:10 PM »
Iam thinking about being done with wa.Utah looks like great country in videos ,but I've never seen it.Does anyone have any good or bad stories to tell about Utah.Iam in the fact finding stage any ideas or info would be great.I do have two older men in the group 75,76 so the steep and deep would not work. Also this would be an archery hunt.Even a trip where lots of animals where seen would be great. Thanks

Utah is great, but it takes years to draw a quality unit. You can road hunt for deer but it is not really worth it because a lot of other people do the same. Which causes traffic jams...literally. In the archery seasons the bucks will be on top so if you can’t do steep it may be tough in most units. Elk tend to be lower but still steep, plus the otc elk are otc for a reason. The elk hunters we run into during the archery season don’t get on a lot of elk unless it’s a limited entry unit. Feel free to pm me if you have more questions.

Thanks for the info,I was hoping for a place where I guy could hunt out of camp and see anaimals. If I could find a area where you can hike hard and the older men could stay closer to camp and get stands and see elk and or deer and be happy. Its hard to please everyone,I just miss hunting like I did when I was a boy.Maybe those days are gone.

Idaho or Colorado might be better for what you are trying to do. Idaho because its close and has lots of otc opportunities. Colorado has lots of otc elk units and there are also a lot of deer units that take zero points to draw.

Regards, Branden

I second Colorado.  It takes forever to draw a Utah elk tag for something like what you are looking for.

There are areas you're talking about in Utah, but you really have to know the state to find em. (grew up there and go back hunting pretty much every year).  Drawing a good permit is extremely tough but, if you  have the $, you can look into the CWMU program.  Several of the units fit your needs as Utah has an extremely wide range of topography.  Im over 70 and hunt with my brothers who are in the mid 70's and we manage to do well most years, but we know the state and different units pretty well. (not all the deer and elk are "up high" during the archery hunt-some of the lower desert type units hold a lot of animals year around).  Like any other new area it takes a lot of preplanning and research to make it work.

Don't forget about Montana. If you apply for the Deer/Elk combo, you seem to have a better opportunity of drawing. Plus you can hunt from Sept. - Dec.
A bad day in the woods is better than a good day at work.
