Savage 10 stealth 6.5 creed
« on: January 12, 2018, 01:38:15 PM »
Does anyone have any experience with the savage 10 BA stealth? I keep going back and forth between it and the Ruger precision. I am mainly concerned with fit and finish I’m sure it is a shooter with the proper load.

I have it and absolutely love it.  I placed a break on mine....though it is not needed.  I adjusted the trigger to 3lbs ish and placed a NF SHV 5-20x56 on it.  I will shoot better than any rifle I have ever owned.....easily a 1/2 MOA gun.  I am pushing 140 grain accubonds at 2730 fps with H4350.

With all this being said, I have heard great things about the ruger as well.  The savage is a little lighter...but not enough to sway anyone, they are both heavy rifles.

The bad:

I had a gun smith work my chamber as I had cases that showed machining marks that made it sticky to extract some shots.  Cost was $50 and not is is smooth as butter.

I am not a fan of the bluing on the barrel....I will be getting it Cerakoted this year to fix my dislike with it.  Not a function issue, just a preference issue.  When I rebarrel it (one of these years) I will make sure it has a stainless barrel.

Great to hear I like the bolt style on the savage much better than the Ruger. For now which ever gun I decide on I’ll be topping it with a vortex viper pst 4-16x50.

I've got a Stealth, a buddy has a RPR.  I bought the Stealth because the RPR was still scarce as hen's teeth when I was looking to buy.  I wish I would have held out for a RPR...  Both guns are comparable accuracy wise - both are tack drivers, close enough that I wouldn't give a nod to one or the other in terms of accuracy.  Given that, I don't think my Stealth has any benefit over the RPR besides being cheaper.  The stock on the RPR is better then the Savage, the RPR has a folding stock and the Savage doesn't, the RPR has a 3 lug short throw bolt, and the RPR allows you to mount the bipod much further forward then the Savage.  As far as actions go - I wouldn't say the Savage feels "better" but it feels "heftier".  The RPR action with a new bolt shroud feels great though, incredibly smooth, but just doesn't have the heft of the Savage is the best way I can describe it.

With all that said, if price is a concern definitely go Savage and you'd be happy.  If you're at all thinking about buying a Savage and swapping stocks or adding a folding adapter, just go Ruger as you'll be at the price of an RPR after you make those upgrades.  Personally I think the RPR looks a lot better as well.

Build your own bolt gun. Do you have a Savage 308 laying around ?

Built off a Savage Model 10 LE 308 donor action I had. MDT LSS Chassis, 6.5 Creedmoor, Blackhole Weaponry Barrel 1:8 twist, Rock River Operator Buttstock right at $1000 rifle only.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

I have thought of this. I would need to pick up a donor. Does the $1000 include the donor?

Picked up a 6.5 stealth also. Sighted it in the other day @100 yds. and the last 3 shots were touching.  Very nice!  Using 129 gr. Interlock factory Hornady ammo for starters.  Going to try the Hornady 143 gr. ELD-X next which I think may be my go to bullet for hunting.  Mounted a Burris Eliminator III on it to see how that works for longer ranges.  Haven't previously used the Burris Eliminator so we'll see.  Might be a while before I can get to an area to shoot at longer ranges but very anxious to see how it performs at longer distances.
