Have you looked at how many Ft.-LBS of energy. 50 Cal round ball has at 100 yards?

I remember being underwhelmed with the retained energy of. 50 Cal roundball, but haven't looked for a while.

I've killed about 10 whitetails with a .50 round ball.  A few dropped on the spot (brain or spine hits), but most act very similar to archery kills.  The animal shows little or no sign of being hit and runs off.  There is usually some hair and/or small blood splatter on the ground where it was hit, with a blood trail starting 20 or 30 yards later.  The blood trail gets progressively larger and the animal is down 50-100 yards away.  Most of the time the ball goes through and through, but a few didn't exit and were found up against the hide on the far side.  There's very little meat damage - you can "eat right up to the hole".

I'm happy with those results on deer.  I'm sure they'd work on elk, but I think a conical is probably a better choice.

I recently purchased some custom roundballs that are a wee-bit harder and better served at longer shot distances. Join the board at castboolits.gunloads.com and look-up member R U Shooter (Tim). He may be willing to cast you the same ones I ordered from him. Tell Tim you desire the same roundballs member GoexBlackhorn purchased from Tim... R U Shooter.

Place your shot carefully broadside through the lungs and you will kill anything in North America with a round ball.  I hit a deer a little forward and got the leg bone with a 50 round ball and 90 grains 3f.  It shattered the leg but only got into one lung. The deer went quite a ways.  I’ve also killed 4 elk and numerous deer with a 54 round ball. It worked perfect but they were all well placed on the rib cage.  Practice for accuracy and only take the right shot and the round ball won’t fail you.
And I think God must be a cowboy at heart
He made wide open spaces from the start
He made grass and trees and mountains and a horse to be a friend
And trails to lead ol' cowboys home again

More through & through harvesting. That's the reason.
I love my Powerbelts too. But not with 1/66 slow-twist barrels. But I will shoot a 185gr sabot/bullet in my roundballer 1/66 twist. It's just disgusting / sacriligious using modern-day bullets for that early 1900s brassy / patchboxed longrifle.

But accuracy is good, out to about 75 yards.
