« on: January 21, 2018, 09:12:49 PM »
Got some flat point soft points 60 grain for 25 caliber,do you guys think I could use these for deer,or should I just save them for coyotes ,reloading ,says I would be at 3000 fps at muzzle.

Great for deer,  better for deer and elk. They penetrate deeper than a spire point.  They will perform great.

Hornady lists that bullet as a "varmint" bullet with excellent results on small game to 100 yards. I would be keeping them for the 'yotes and get something more "bigger" for deer and in no way shape or form be launching one of those soft tiny bullets at an elk.

Thanks for info guys, still not sure yet ,if I can find a load that will be as accurate as I need,so still working on loads for it .

I did see it says varmint bullet, but I thought cause it was a flat point soft point for a lever action that it might have some great expansion I might have to test it and see if I can get a bullet in wet paper.

Definitely not a deer or elk bullet. What cartridge are we talking about here? The only use I could think of is if you wanted a reduced recoil load for deer, this bullet would work well if loaded to a muzzle velocity of somewhere around 2,000 to 2,500 fps. Other than that I wouldn't waste my time trying to make them work for any purpose other than just target practice.

Those are designed for the very old 25-20 cartridge, in no way were they ever designed to shoot at anything larger than a coyote and then at a reduced velocity.  If you want to shoot deer and elk use a bullet designed for the job.  I shoot a 25-204, 250 Savage and hunted for years with the 257 Roberts.  IMO the very best bullet in the 257 caliber is the 100 gr Partition, on deer the 87gr SP will work well in the slower 250 Sav and 257 Roberts, for Elk I'd stay above the the 100 gr threshold, your going to want more penetration on elk.  75 gr V-max and Horn and Sierra HP's work well on coyotes but can break up pretty quickly on bigger game.  The Horn. 117 grain RN works very well out of the 25-35, shot one of them for a while.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Yep, save them for the coyote or plinking. Be foolish to recommend use on deer or elk, but as we all know, those fools are out there..
