Another one in the books
« on: January 29, 2018, 11:32:21 AM »
How did everyone fair for the final weekend?

Overall ended mine with 9 between two hunts, helped control the merganser population a little bit  :chuckle:

Also some bluebills, mallards and goldeneyes.

The warmer weather this season really seemed to have an affect on the numbers of birds, haven't been on this forum much this year to see how everyone else felt, but its seemed like lower numbers. Think I only downed one or two scaup all season and don't really recall seeing more than a handful of buffleheads.

All and all a good fun season and will be back out next year! Hope you all did as well!

I got a chance to hunt the last three days of the WA waterfowl season in central WA with a guy I've known from the Refuge Forums but had never previously met in person.  Only the third time in 19 years of living in the Northwest that I have hunted WA.  We had fun even if the weather was conspiring against us.  One day an unexpected freeze-up of the water we were on limited the amount of birds visiting us.  On another, we watched at least a thousand geese fly off their water roosts to feed in nearby fields, only to see the heavy fog roll in.  The birds never came back before the end of shoot time.  We still managed to have a few ups on passing flocks and scratch some honkers down, including one that was banded.   Never fired at a duck all weekend.  But it was fun to see new terrain and hunt with new people.  All in all a great time.

Definitely a season to remember. I am fortunate to have a wife that allows me so much of our free time to pursue the outdoor sports. I was also able to release alot of responsibilities and enjoy my best season so far. Good friends were along many times and also plenty of adventures with just my dog, exploring new places. Good thing my family enjoys eating ducks and geese cuz we brought plenty home. A few more goose trips next month then hurry up September!

Finished out the last weekend pretty strong with back to back 7 man limits of almost all widgeon. Seemed like the season didn't really heat up for me until the after Christmas/early january. Hunted with a couple of my regular buddies that are also members here and a few newer faces. 7 seems like a too many to hunt with and probably won't go that big again for a while just not as fun. Buddy picked out this nice storm on the last day.

Got to watch my dog do 3 epic blind retrieves on some snows. a 500 + and 2 100+ yard blinds. Not bad for a 2.5 year old that I trained
