Got the new 338 scoped

I finally got around to leveling and truing up the scope and rings on the 338 rcm. Irons are all sighted in and will go out tomorrow and sight the scope, weather and family permitting. Recoil is surprisingly little for the size and weight of the rifle. Off hand and field positions that is, the bench not so much. Im happy with her so far.

I have a compact magnum in 338rcm but mine is stainless synthetic. Kicks like a MOFO but I love it. My younger sister loves it she uses it deer bunting and I use my 308. I would suggest putting a Timney 2.5 pound trigger in it you won’t regret it!!

I plan on taking it out for song dogs and and any other varmints I can get at with it to get used to the rifle and see how it performs in the field, before I use for more serious game.
I got lucky with the trigger on this one, according to my pull gauge it breaks at 3.2 pounds and its relatively crisp.
I really liked this rifle over any I found in 338 win mag or 338 federal. The rcm seems fill the performance void inbetween those 2 cartridges. What I really cant wait for is load development for it.

I have a lot of brass for mine. What bullets are you going to reload?

Id stick a new pad on it. Those wood stocks kick like a mule.  Nice looking rifle.

Im partial to the hornady soft points but everyone says the accubonds are great and the woodleigh weldcores really peek my interest.

Accubonds are a great choice. I have killed more then a few animals with a 225g .338 from my 340wby. Always around 75% weight retention and usually dead on impact results.

That’s a good looking setup. 

Anything in the 200-225 range should work well. I like the accubonds or one of the solid copper bullets, but the classic 210 partition would be hard to beat.

Ive only been able to find the 210 grain accubonds at 1 place locally, but plenty of the 200 and 225s. I havent been able to find any hornady 338's except for the sst's locally and im not to fond of them.

I have about 500 225 Hornady Interlocks, good bullets.   Private stash, none for sale.  And a bunch of 210 Partitions, also good bullets.

Have you checked  SportCo in Fife and Sportsmans Warehouse on South Hill? They usually have pretty good selections for bullets.

Shooters Pro Shop is a great place to get bullets for cheap. I just got 3 boxes of .338 200 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips for $17/box, but they're out of stock now. Most of their bullets don't last long so you need to check often and order fast when you find some in stock.

Good point.  I support the local guys also but when they do not have the items I need, the keyboard gets a workout.   

I mess around with 9.3x62, 9.3x64 and 8x68S cartridges, bullets are not in the local shops, no market for them locally.   I do buy 300 and 338 Nosler Partitions from Swains in Port Angeles, they have a good supply.  And gunpowder, likely the best selection of gun powder on the Peninsula.

The 9.3 always interested me. Arent one of the 9.3's, i think 9.3x63, almost twin to the 35 whelen? Everyone has 200 and 225 grain accubonds as well as Barnes solid coppers, but no one has the old traditional soft points on the shelf.

9.3x62 has a little edge over the 35 Whelen due to larger powder capacity.

9.3x64 is basically identical performance to the 375 H&H.

Both cartridges will fit in the M98 Mauser.

I have a 9.3x62 now and I am gathering parts for a 9.3x64.   Already have the barrel and a M98 action.  I will build the rifle in the African Cape Rifle style, it will have a 29 inch barrel and iron sights.

Try 225 grain Hornady Interlocks for your 338.    An old standby Elk bullet for years.    Shot my first bull with it.   Soft point bullet.

180 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips are a devastating long range deer bullet in the 338's.   Not too shabby on Elk also.
