Smelt 2018 season
« on: January 29, 2018, 11:38:35 AM »
Hopefully they open Smelt dipping season around  Columbia River. 2nd weekend February? My kids are all excited as this became a family tradition couple of years back. Love these tasty morsels.
Happy Hunting and Fishing

We watched about 10 seals work the smelt at Cathlamet on Sunday morning at day break. I guess the duck and goose hunters get to see what is going on all the time this time of the year.

Bird hunters did get a show. Hunted the channel both days. Very large groups of seals and sealions were pushing huge shoals of fish over the flats at Jackson inlet, with the accompanying flocks of terns and gulls. Sunday's diver shoot was choice with a few surface boils within the blocks. Sure feel bad for the steelhead and kings once the smelt run peters out. Pinn numbers are insane on the Columbia right now.

We also saw Sealions in the Greys River up to the Hiway. It has been many years since I have seen that. The Steelhead will have a tough go with them in the river. I bet Deep River will be just as bad. That sucks.
